Jim Copeland Obituary

Jim Copeland
December 27, 1941 - April 25, 2022
San Luis Obispo, California - Longtime community business leader, advocate, mentor and philanthropist, Jim Copeland, passed away on April 25, 2022 at French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, surrounded by family after a short battle with a sudden illness. He was 80-years-old.
Jim was born on December 27, 1941 in Berkeley, California to parents Jack and Thelma Copeland. After living in Oakland during his early years, Jack and Thelma moved the family to the Central Coast, where Jim and his younger brother, Tom, grew up. Jim attended both Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo High Schools, where he played football. He graduated from San Luis Obispo High in 1959.
After high school, Jim attended the College of the Sequoias in Visalia and later Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, before deciding to join the United States Army. Jim once said that joining the Army was the best decision he ever made, because after being stationed in San Antonio, Texas, he was transferred to the Black Hills Army Depot in Igloo, South Dakota, where he met the love of his life, Sandy Cooley. Jim and Sandy were married on March 2, 1963 and enjoyed each other as husband and wife for more than 59 years.
Family was extremely important to Jim, and after being honorably discharged from the military in 1965, he returned with his young and growing family to the Central Coast to help his mom run her store, Copeland's Fine Shoes. It was from there that Jim and Tom co-founded Copeland Sports, growing one sporting goods store in San Luis Obispo to over 50 locations in four states. They sold the retail chain along with other sporting goods manufacturing companies in 2001.
Jim and Tom made it a priority to revitalize downtown San Luis Obispo by preserving historic buildings and creating new developments, including Hotel San Luis Obispo, Downtown Center, China Town, and Court Street. Jim was also involved in other business ventures to provide products, services and technologies to help the world become a cleaner, healthier place.
Jim and Sandy long supported the community with health care, the arts, academia, and athletics. They were founding sponsors of French Hospital's Copeland, Forbes & Rossi Cardiac Care Center, Hearst Cancer Resource Center, and Copeland Health and Education Pavilion, as well as significant donors to the Christopher Cohen Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo Children's Museum, Old Mission School retrofit, and the new San Luis Obispo County Jail Behavioral Health Unit, benefiting inmates with mental health issues.
Invaluable champions of Cal Poly's academic and athletic success, Jim and Sandy, along with Tom and his wife Pam, started the Elijah McCoy Scholars program, funding ten full ride scholarships for Black engineering students to graduate without student debt. Additionally, Jim and Sandy have provided for campus improvements, including the Beach Volleyball Complex, Baseball Clubhouse, Mott Athletic Center and the future Tennis Pavilion. Jim was a big fan of Cal Poly sports teams, attending as many competitions as he could. He enjoyed cheering on the Mustangs with Sandy. Even during his illness, Jim watched as many Cal Poly baseball games online as he was able and knew how every player was doing. Planned before his passing, Jim will be conferred an honorary Doctorate of Business from Cal Poly in June of 2022.
Civically, Jim was a member of French Hospital Medical Center's Community Board having served from 2004 up until his passing. He held many positions, including as Chairman of the Board. He received the 2014 Louis M. Tedone Humanitarian Award for community wellness contributions. Even during the last moments of his life, Jim was talking "hospital business" with the doctors and staff, while thanking them for the care he had received. It is with heartfelt gratitude that Jim's family would like to thank the entire team of doctors and ICU staff who treated him with the utmost levels of expertise and compassion, including doctors Jim Malone, Lin Soe, Kevin Ferguson, Mark Soll, Howard Hayashi, Thomas Vendegna, Michael DiBiase, Mike Ryan, Chris Holland and Ross Michel.
Jim was preceded in death by his father Jack, mother Thelma, and step-father, Bernard Roselip. He is survived by his wife— Sandy, his brother—Tom (Pam), his three children—Mike (Sharon) Copeland, Kathy (Tom) Casares and Rick (Mariver) Copeland, his six grandchildren—Hannah Fehlman, Camille (Eric) Peterson, Grant and Bryan Copeland, and Luke and Ally Copeland, three great grandchildren—Zoey Fehlman and Ava and Olivia Peterson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a private celebration of life held for Jim.

Just prior to his passing, Jim received a message from a local business leader that read, "We leave this world twice in our lives. Once in death and once when we are forgotten. You will not be forgotten. I will tell tales and stories till the end of my own life, reminding the young and old the many lessons you brought to bear. Why a man who started in shoes, left footprints far and wide. Why difficult paths are worth taking and outcomes matter." Jim gave his best in serving his Nation, the Central Coast community, friends, and family. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Sandy, Mike, Kathy and Rick,
I just heard of the passing of Jim . I am so sorry for your loss. So many memories flooded in from my time at Copelands Sports-first in advertising and later as a manager. I have many work memories of Jim, but my fondest were on a more personal note. In advertising when I stabbed myself with an exacto knife and he sent me to urgent care on told me to have them "put it on my tab". Later, also in the advertising dept. when i was 19, he found out my wisdom teeth were bothering me and arranged with his dentist to have them pulled. Again, on "his tab".( although I suspect Sandy had something to do with that one) Or the time he visited "my" store in SF and I took him to the airport after. Instead of being nervous about my "assertive" driving, he told me "wow-you have a handle on big city driving!"
Although he could be intimidating , I always found him to be kind and thoughtful. I owe much of who I became as an adult from my time at Copelands Sports. The opportunities and guidance Jim and Tom gave me as a young person helped grow my confidence and go on to become a business owner. I will always remember him fondly.

Growing up in San Luis Obispo Copelands Fine Shoes was a big part of downtown. I remember buying my first pair of Adidas shoes from Thelma Copeland and I remember when Jim and Tom opened Copelands Sports around the corner on Monterey St in the early 1970´s and I bought my first bicycle from them. Jim and Tom did a lot of good things to our down town area especially with the development of the Downtown Center which was a big hole in the ground in the late 1980´s and turned it into a downtown centerpiece where many people can enjoy the S L O life.
Thank you for all you did to better our town Jim.
My condolences to the Copeland family.

Condolences to the Copeland family. From buying Buster Brown shoes from Thelma as a kid, to the Sports stores, to the rebuilding of downtown SLO, I find it astonishing how much Jim, and Tom, enriched this community. Jim´s involvement on various boards, support for sports programs and corporate leadership reflect that which is seldom seen. His legacy is well cemented.

My condolences to the family. As a young man, I was fortunate to work for Copelands and to meet Jim, Sandy, Mike, Kathy, Ricky, and of course Thelma. Jim and the family have obviously made a tremendous impact in the world and the world and SLO are a better place because of this. Thank you Jim for being a blessing to so many. I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Copeland when I was 5 years old. He was one of many outstanding male role models I have been lucky enough to have in my life. I would not be the man I am today without his influence while I was growing up. Mr. Copeland was a funny, warm, generous, brilliant and extremely competitive man. He was a great role model for being an involved, loving Father to his kids , beloved son to his Mom and devoted Husband to his wife...... My day was always better when our paths crossed. He raised a wonderful family and the world is a little better because of Mr. Copeland.

My wife Jan and I are so very sorry to learn of Jim's passing. Not long ago, we met with Jim and Sandy to visit and bid farewell to our mutual close friend Pat O'Daniels, in a hospital in Santa Maria. Time has no boundaries in the passing of friends and loved ones and the time we share in life becomes more valuable than anything we can attain. Pleasant memories are the treasures that are left to reflect upon. Those golden moments, incidents, achievements and even the passing of dear friends like Jim Copeland. His presence and his many contributions and accomplishments are inspiring and he will not be forgotten. Our sincere condolences to Sandy and the family. May he rest in peace.

A person always hopes to make a difference in life. Jim obviously has left an amazing difference in so many lives and his community. I have had the pleasure of working with Kathy and I know he has left behind an amazing daughter with wonderful work and family ethics. My heart breaks for you all, know that his strength lies within you. With that strength you can accomplish anything, just as he did. Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I knew Jim from the time he was in 6th grade at Fraces Judkins Elem school,Pismo. He was taught that year by Mom, Gladyce Forden. Later he was in my class of '59 at SLO High. I wore many pairs of shoes from Copelands! Although I haven't seen Jim for many years, I'm so pleased to read of all the many great projects you and he supported. May your sadness be blessed with wonderful memories, sirrounded by your abundant family. Go well now and always.
Sincerely, Susan Forden
