Joan Carter
June 12, 2021
San Luis Obispo, California - Joan Carter, of San Luis Obispo, age 86, entered into the greater universe on June 12, 2021.
At her request, there will be no memorial service, but a cremation by her family.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Kim, Kristin, and Karen. She was preceded
In death by her son Kent in 2015.
She wished to say thank you to her children and friends throughout her life for the joy they brought her. Peace to you dear Mom! May you sail into the ethers. We love and admire and appreciate you for all your contributions, hell-raising, courage, and joys you gave us!
She was a decades-long vegan and animal activist. In support of animals, the environment and health, it was a way of life and her greatest passion.
She was a world traveler, and a staunch progressive political activist with Mothers for Peace, Code Pink, and many local political campaigns for issues related to the environment and good government. She worked for Hospice, built houses for Habitat for Humanity, volunteered with CASA, the Pacific Wildlife Center, and the County Animal Shelter where she created the "Small Dog Lap Training" program, which carries on to this day. She fostered and trained over 50 dogs that were all adopted after her fostering. She volunteered with the Audubon Society, participating in many annual bird counts, and was the was a co-founder of the White Heron Sangha in 1991.
In lieu of flowers, cards or gifts, you can honor her by donating to your favorite charity, or one of hers: The County Animal Shelter, Willow Tree Wildlife (Rescue), Mothers for Peace, or the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility. In addition, my mother requested " ...in lieu of memorials. please send acerbic letters to republicans."

I met Joan at a state park campground in west Texas in spring of 2006. She was with her beautiful dog Mica. On hearing my travel plans, she invited me to stay at her home in Morro Bay, on the CA coast, as I made my way north toward Seattle. What a gracious and humble soul she was, as well as a powerful activist.
