John Gong Obituary

Brigadier General John Gong, of Atascadero, was born in 1947 in Canton, China, and passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 29, 2012. During his early years in China, he lived in a two-room dirt floor house with his family. One of John''s favorite stories of when he was young was the tale of the Monkey King from the Chinese folklore, "Journey to the West." At age eight, John took his own journey to the west when he immigrated to the United States to reside in Dos Palos, Calif. He excelled in academics and was a graduate from Pacific Christian College (BS), University of San Francisco (MA), California Military Academy, Command and General Staff College and the Army''s Senior Service College. In 1971, John began a 38-year military career when he was accepted into the California Military Academy. Over the years, he moved through the ranks and in 2001, became the first American-Chinese General officer of the Line in the California Army National Guard. Throughout his career, John held a variety of assignments, including Supply Management Officer, Transportation Officer, Chief Contracting Officer, Commander of the 240th Infantry Division in Long Beach, Calif., as well as Brigade Commander of the 40th Infantry Division. His service took him far beyond the U.S., where he also served as Deputy Commanding General for Intelligence and Detainee Operations in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in the global war on terrorism in 2005. During his military career, he was recipient of the Legion of Merit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, numerous state decorations and the Order of Saint Martin, presented to him by the Quartermasters Association of the United States. After 38 years of meritorious service to his state and nation, John retired in 2006. Outside of his career, John also served as President of the Central Coast Chinese Professional Association, Ironroad Pioneers SLO railroad project, Central Coast chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and the local chapter of the Military Order of World Wars. John enjoyed working in his garden, on his home and spending time with his wife of nearly 40 years, Betty, daughters Kristie and Harmony, and their spouses Scott and Henry. Besides a brilliant and respected career, he said his greatest achievement was the 25-year endeavor in completing his dream home with own bare hands. In a newspaper article which reflected on his beginnings, he said "This is what a little, short guy can do. You can do it too." Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at the Los Osos Valley Mortuary in Los Osos. A service for General Gong will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at the Chapel at Camp San Luis Obispo, with graveside honors immediately following at the Los Osos Valley Memorial Park. John (General Gong) and I became scuba buddies 2005-2006. The afternoon prior to his trip home, we went on a last hurrah reef dive in about 45 feet of warm Caribbean water. On that memorable day, we saw lots of reef fish, sea turtles and other beautiful fish and corals. John was so easy going and had a the spirit of an explorer. He was young at heart and willing to do adventurous sporting things on a whim (as much as a whim an Army General can do things on). I specifically recall, his personal scuba gear was packed up and shipped out but he was able to easily borrow equipment from myself and others to have some last minute fun. I was sad to have lost touch after that year, but as people in the military tend to do, we get assigned elsewhere and sometimes lose touch for a period of time. I found this obituary several years ago and was saddened at the time, and did not write a note. I thought of John today for no particular read and wanted to follow though with sharing a memory to his likely wonderful family. John it would have been great to know you today particularly when it would be so nice to have had a friend and mentor to visit during my frequent travel to California. Rest well, while cut short, you lived a pretty amazing life.

I and John became friend at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba while we both were stationed there. He became close friend of mine when I invited him at my residence there at dinner. As an American Muslim I was proud to have such an amazing decorated Asian/American high commanding US Military soldier who was professional in his field and proud to serve with his line of command in U.S. Army. I am gonna miss him forever.

He was a CPT and I was a SGT (later a CWO) in the Cal Guard, we both played the guitar, our families were friends back in the mid/late 70's. I remember having a dinner or two at his and Betty's house, that he was refurbishing on his own in Morro Bay. Lost track of him and Betty until this day. I have thought of him and Betty often over the years. Johnny was a Great American, a Patriot, and a friend - our deepest condolences..

John, you are gone, it is something which I did not want to know. I had been looking for you John since 2006, after you retired and went back to your home state "The Great California", but unfortunately I got very busy and felt myself as I am an ignorant and a selfish friend who did not do much to keep in touch with you. But John, you might have been gone so far where nobody has returned but John you have not gone out of my memories, you would live there forever as my Best Friend and Mentor. I will miss you for rest of my life. I wish somebody from your family can contact me and make share my memories which we both had about our childhood life's similarities and we used to talk a lot.

John was a mentor, a friend, a man of his word, and a fellow Christian. He was a leader that could be firm, yet gentle at the same time.

John promoted Barry to Lieutenant Colonel and asked him to emcee his celebratory dinner upon his promotion to Brigadier General--we have the utmost respect for John and heartfelt condolence for Betty and family.

We'll see you in Heaven, John!

Betty, Christie & Harmony,
Deepest sympathy on the loss of a Great Husband and Father to you. No words can truly express the sadness we feel. However, I have fond memories of John and how I first met him. It was lunch at the Imperial Palace, with Betty,John, and your folks, when Shirley and I were engaged. I remember Uncle Sid saying, "he's a Captain in the U.S. Army, as I was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force. When Uncle Sid mentioned his rank, I snapped a salute and John broke out with a huge smile and shook my hand, and he had a firm hand shake. John struck me as quite an intelligent person, a person with a "can do" attitude, and it is reflected with his prestigious rank of Brigadier General! General Gong could not attend my military retirement ceremony but he sent a letter of congratulations, that was read at my retirement. Everyone was impressed that such a distinguished General Officer from the State of California sent me that letter of congratulations. I will miss General Gong, my Cousin John; but he lives within our hearts because of the love we have of him, and he lives because of our cherished memories of him.
With high regard and respect for a fellow Veteran! Betty, Christie and Harmony; may peace be with you in cherished memories of this Great person,Husband, and Father.

Dear Betty and family,

It is with great sadness to hear of John's passing, he was such a special person in my husband Chuck and my life. John and Chuck spent a part of their Army National Guard Military Career working together at the USPFO. Chuck thought of John as one of his favorite friends and coworkers and felt a deep respect, admiration and appreciation for him. Chuck and I had attended ceremony's for John when he was promoted and we were proud and honored to be there. BG John Gong had also been my boss when I was working for the USPFO and I also have a deep respect and admiration for him as a boss and friend. BG John Gong was instrumental in helping with my late husband Chuck's funeral. I am truely sorry that I wasn't able to make the service as I am out of town presently. BG John will truely be missed.

Dear Betty and family,
I am so sad because of the knowledge of John of Johns passing, and for the past three days I cannot get him off my mind. As you know, I was his First Sergeant for the last four years that I was in the California National Guard. That time period was the most enjoyable of my thirty year career in the Army and NG. He was a great leader, who always was concerned about his people. He always "Set the example". I will never forget that Sunday morning, when he called me into his office and told that there was a great Army training film on at the Fremont theater in SLO. The name of it is, "Saving Private Ryan" and our Detachment should see it on that Sunday (Drill Day)..... and we all did, and it was great training. What a man he was......I shall never forget him, for he is a great inspiration....Your "Top"

My deepest sympathies to Betty, Kristie, and Harmony. I am truly saddened at the loss of this great Army General, John Gong exemplified the Army Values; Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. It was my honor to have worked with him at USPFO and to call him a friend. I'll never forget the "great Toro Creek bathtub move"- it was funny. He once wrote to me "Friends don't die." Rest in Peace my friend.

I was very saddened to hear the passing of my cousin john. I remember last seeing him at my cousin tawnys wedding. He always had a smile on his face and was so nice to everyone. I am very sad he won't be at my wedding this October. I was unable to attend the service today due to my work schedule. Praying for Betty, christy and harmony, god bless.

I worked for, with, and around BG Gong for most of my career. I am proud to be able to say he was also a friend and mentor. He was somebody any soldier, even us lower enlisted types, could go up to and just talk to. His door was always open and his number was in speed dial. I was honored to be an 'invited guest' to both his promotion to BG and his retirement dinner/ceremony in which he mentioned me by name in his retirement speech. I was proud to be a SGT that helped keep him moving forward. To Betty and the girls, he was a great man that will be remembered forever by many of us. We share your pain. Love to the family.
