Marshall Wright Obituary

Marshall "Marty" Wright, 85, passed away peacefully after a two-year battle with cancer Tuesday, July 26, 2011. A native of Portland, Ore., Marty earned bachelor''s degrees in Chemistry (1946) and Philosophy (1952) at Reed College, and his M.A. in Chemistry at the University of Oregon in Eugene (1949). Both he and his future wife, Virginia Ann Shirley, were members of Musicians Union Local 99 in Portland, where they were active local players. By the time of their marriage in 1950, Virginia had become principal clarinetist with the Portland (later Oregon) Symphony Orchestra, and Marty played saxophone and clarinet with local dance bands and played on the road with the Ray Baduc Orchestra (1948) and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (1949). The Wrights moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1952, where Marty played with the Jack Fina Orchestra, Gerald Wilson Big Band, Earl Hines'' Traditional Jazz Ensemble and a quintet led by the late Brew Moore. Marty brought his family to San Luis Obispo in 1960, where he taught Chemistry for 31 years at Cal Poly. Marty took two sabbatical leaves before his full-time retirement from teaching in 1988. He and his family spent the 1967-68 academic year at the University of Oregon, and he and Virginia spent the 1978-79 academic year at the University of Konstanz in Konstanz, Germany. During the spring quarter of 1991, Marty put his chemistry books on the shelf and taught a course in Jazz History at Cal Poly. From 1984 until the spring of 2008, Marty played clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone with the San Luis Obispo Symphony Orchestra. He performed with the symphony during the concert tour of Spain in 1996, the 2001 concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC, the 2006 performance at the Sydney Opera House in Australia and at the symphony''s June 2008 performance at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. From 1994 until the summer of 2009, Marty was a member of the Royal Garden Swing Orchestra. He can be heard playing clarinet and alto saxophone on the orchestra''s CD, "Best Foot Forward," recorded in 2008. Marty''s brilliant intellect, fine musicianship and marvelously clever and witty sense of humor will live on forever in the memories and hearts of his adoring family and friends. Marty is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Virginia Wright of Shell Beach; daughter, Tracy Wright, of Portland; and son, Jeffrey Wright and partner, Silvia Lopez of Atascadero. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Wright, in 1984. A celebration of Marty''s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

Words cannot describe how deeply saddened we are to hear about your loss. I first met Dr. Wright when I was a student in his class. Over the years, we've exchanged our yearly Christmas cards to keep in touch. I remembered fondly looking forward to receiving his card because of his whimsical drawings, humorous greetings or even a comic strip he'd managed to attach. What a beautiful person and what an honor to have met him! He will truly be missed.

Virginia,

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I am so glad I got to know Marty and will always remember his ball cap and quick wit. Growing up I always thought Marty was one of the coolest adults I knew. He had such a great way of looking at the world and was always such a joy to see.

I'm so glad I got to see him one last time this summer-- even if just briefly. He really was a gem.

There would have been no Rural Jazz Ensemble without Marty Wright. The light has gone out. What a drag.

Virginia,

I will always remember Marty as a "hip cat." He was the coolest, with his straight-faced sense of humor and soulful sax playing. May you and your family have peace in knowing that Marty made a difference in the lives of those he touched.

Virginia: Shirley and I join the many others in expressing our sorrow at your loss. It has been a joy and an honor to have been a small part of your lives for fifty years. Every local musician who played alongside Marty strived to be a better player trying to rise to his level.

He's playing the lead tenor part in the ultimate band by now, so he's in a better place.

Virginia and Family,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of this great man and musician. I grew to know Marty through my clarinet lessons with Virginia while I grew up on the central coast. I'll always remember his funny, quick witted remarks he'd have every time I saw him. Great jokes and always cheerful. I had the pleasure to later get to know him as a saxophonist as I started to play around the SLO county area. He will be missed.

Dear Virginia,
We are so sad to hear of the loss of your beloved. Just yesterday Alice told us the sorrowful news. Over the past couple of years we knew how concerned you were for Marty and how heartbreaking his physical setbacks. Even though our family did not personally know him well, we knew the impact his career and many contributions made to your family and the whole community. Our deepest sympathy. My sincere condolences to the family. I first knew Marty when he was the cool chem professor and I was just a student at Cal Poly. Later I got to know him as a musician and played with him several times at Cal Poly Collegians' reunions. He was one of the best, and it was our privilege to have known him. We'll miss everything from his playing to his quirky Christmas cards.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of one of the finest people I have ever known. I met Marty as a chemistry student in San Luis Obispo and loved his wit and humor. He took time to create a friendship that will last until we meet again on 'the other side.' The small portion of his music in which I was aware of was great and I know from it that Virginia, whom I have not met, is a wonderful person. May God be with you.

My sincere condolences for all the family in the loss of Marty. I remember him most when blowing a mean sax in the "night band" from Cuesta and in the Royal Garden Swing Orchestra. He was a lovely man and indeed his sense of humor was legend!

Marty was a gem. I am glad to have known him, heard him play and to visit with him. Both he and Virginia had very positive effects on local musicians. It was a pleasure to encounter Marty at a musical event, whether he was performing or supporting the local music scene. I will miss him.
