Mary Michaels Obituary

Mary Angela (Giglio) Michaels Mary Angela "Angie" Michaels was born to Salvatore "Sam" and Josephine "Jo" (LaBarbera) Giglio (d.) in Galveston, Texas, in December 1928, older sister to John Giglio (d.). She grew up in Galveston until the age of ten or eleven when they moved to California, eventually settling in San Bernardino, California. She graduated from St. Bernardine High School. She studied voice under Everton E. Stidham and participated in San Bernardino Civic Opera. She was active in the church choir of Holy Rosary Parish (now the cathedral), in San Bernardino. She met the love of her life, Bernard George Michaels (Mike, d. April 4, 2016), in that same choir loft. As he was in the Air Force and stationed in Bermuda, they were married there on September 26th, 1951. They welcomed four children: David Joseph (d. 2011, survived by wife Carol Ann Klimek) in 1952; Robert Francis in 1954 (sons Benjamin, Judd Noah, and Moses, and their mother Deborah Harris Michaels [divorced]); Fr. Patrick Thomas in 1955, and Catherine Grace in 1958; resettling in San Bernardino when Mike finished his service. Angie lived a very active life supporting her family: cooking, cleaning, and directing five other very busy lives. She was a Den Mother in Cub Scouts and a Girl Scout Leader, volunteering tirelessly at church, school and in the community. Once the kids were off to college and Mike had transferred from Pasadena to Idaho Falls, she began to get involved in local Garden Clubs and visiting Nursing homes where she sang and did arts and crafts with the residents. She would continue in these two pursuits for the rest of her active life. She won many awards for her volunteer activities, particularly in the Garden Club. When Mike retired from GMAC in 1983, they said goodbye to the icy winters and returned to California to be close to three of their children, settling in Paso Robles, which is where they would live the rest of their days. Angie was an important member of the California Garden Club, participating in the Multiflora Branch of the Monta¤a de Oro District (San Luis Obispo County) Garden Clubs, winning Woman of the Year (2005) from the California Garden Club (she headed up a program for "Garden Therapy" which she used in Nursing Homes locally for over 15 years). Through Floral Design Study Club she won many ribbons for her floral arrangements. In their waning years Mike would go with Angie to meetings and events throughout California. Angie died peacefully in her home on Monday, July 4th, 2016, exactly three months to the day after Mike. Sign her guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

Angela was a caring teacher. As a garden club member, I worked with her at the nursing home and she always had clever floral pieces to make. I loved touring her gardens and learning how to nurture my plants. She was amazing.
