Michael Callahan Obituary

Michael Callahan
February 20, 1950 - May 31, 2021
San Luis Obispo, California - Mike Callahan, the first born of Bob and Pat Callahan and our older brother passed on May 31, 2021 at the age of 71. Mike passed at his home in the Philippines that he shared with his longtime companion Mimi after a 3-year battle with throat cancer.
Mike was born in Los Angeles February 20, 1950, moved to San Luis Obispo in 1965 and graduated from Mission Central Catholic High School in 1968. After a year spent at Santa Clara University, he transferred to UCSB, graduating there in 1972. He then began an adventurous life which took him first to San Francisco where he worked for the ACLU, then to Vancouver, BC where he worked as a consultant for an engineering company. He lived in Vancouver for many years eventually becoming partner in a Copper Mining company, a job that afforded him extensive international travel. In the early 1990's this job took him to the Philippines where he eventually moved full time. He eventually sold the mining company and semi-retired in his early 50's. He became a partner in a resort at Coral Beach in the Philippines where he enjoyed resort living and golfing. Mike was an avid reader and enjoyed socializing with family and friends and hosting golf tournaments for his international group of friends at the Coral Beach Resort. He lived life to the fullest and traveled the world always making time for golf. We will always remember his sarcastic wit and will dearly miss his visits home to the Central Coast.
Mike was predeceased by his Parents Bob & Pat and Sister Judy. He is survived by siblings Steve, Tom, Susan, Nancy, Bob, Carol, and many nieces & nephews. He is also survived by his companion Minerva (Mimi) Caseres and his extended Philippines family.

It's hard to believe that the news of Mike's illness and passing has taken so long to reach many of his Vancouver friends. Mike was a great friend to me during his years here, as well as being an important part of so many other peoples' lives. A true "genial curmudgeon", Mike was the only person I've ever met who could be completely irate about something, and moments later be laughing at himself for his own irascibility. There are so many funny events and stories to tell. I always thought the day would come when we would be getting together again with Mike in Vancouver, having a beer, trading friendly jabs, and most of all enjoying each other's company. It's sad to know that that day will never come. He was a very good man, and the world is a poorer place without him.

We socialized with them and helped them buy their first house in the Kerrisdale district of Vancouver. We have good memories of Mike.

Michael and I were friends and fellow classmates at UC Santa Barbara for the three years we attended there. I have such good memories of times with him, both serious (studying for finals) and not serious ( parties of various kinds and other sometimes crazy things). He led an interesting life and left good memories with everyone who knew him. I was out of touch with him in recent years and regret that. But I am glad for the memories and will treasure those.
