Paso Robles, California - Michael E. Fitzgerald, 84, a retired Navy Captain and former math teacher at Mission College Prep High School, passed peacefully on March 22nd at Twin Cities Community Hospital, in Templeton California after an extended battle with leukemia.
A resident of Paso Robles, CAPT. Fitzgerald was born and grew up in Annapolis, Md. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959 and served for thirty years in the U.S. Navy with various commands and tours of duty around the world. His final sea duty tour was as Chief of Staff for a Battle Group of over 12,000 naval personnel based out of Alameda California aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. CARL VINSON.
Michael, a lifelong model-railroad enthusiast, retired from the navy in 1989 and settled in Paso Robles. He graduated from Cal. Poly. in San Luis Obispo and then taught Math for 18 years at San Luis Obispo's Mission Preparatory High School where he was known as "Mr. Fitz". He was an avid visitor and establishing member of the Sherwood Dog Park in Paso Robles. Michael was an older brother to Stephen and Peter, a loving husband to Ursula and a cherished father to Chris, David and Kevin. He was Opa to Jay, Alexandra, Julia, Claire and Michaela and a friend to many.
There will be a memorial service at the Mission in San Luis Obispo at 10:00 am on Monday April 4th 2022.
