Paul Karshner Obituary

Paul H. Karshner passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in Gig Harbor, Wash.

A private military service will be held March 5, at Mt. Tehoma National Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Peninsula Lutheran Church, 6509 38th Ave. NW, Gig Harbor. For directions to the church, call 253-851-3511.

Born to Edwin and Caroline Karshner July 15, 1933, Paul spent his early years in Aberdeen, Wash. and graduated from Weatherwax High School with the class of 1951. He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Washington, where he studied pre-med. He graduated from the University of Washington Medical School in St. Louis, Mo. After serving 11 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, he was in private medical practice in San Luis Obispo until his retirement in 1995.

Paul served his country as an officer in the Army, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam and Okinawa and received a Bronze Star for meritorious service in the first Gulf War. He retired from the Army as a full Col. in 1995.

An avid Husky football fan, skier and traveler, Paul especially enjoyed spending time on the Hood Canal. He loved being a physician and helping others, loved his children and grandchildren and will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit.

Paul is survived by his wife Martha of Gig Harbor; children, Steve Hoyt and partner Destini Moore, Ken and Cynthia Karshner, Karen and Shaun Tabor and Don and Roxanne Karshner; grandchildren, Bailey, Alex, Taylor, Kyle and Paul; and sister Kebbie Snider of Hood Canal.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Schafer Karshner.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Peninsula Lutheran Church to purchase a set of hand bells. Contributions may be sent to PLC, P.O. Box 2209, Gig Harbor, WA, 98335, or

you may contribute to the Friends of the Paul H. Karshner Memorial Museum, 309 4th St. NE, Puyallup, WA 98372, or to a charity of your choice.
