Randy Johnson Obituary

Randy Lee Johnson
November 22, 1951 - May 24, 2023
Morro Bay, California - Randy Lee Johnson, age 71, of Morro Bay CA left this earthly realm on May 24th, 2023. Randy was born in Bellevue, Michigan in November 1951. He graduated from Marshall High School in Marshall, Michigan. Randy grew up a country farm boy. He lived on the outskirts of town where he gained a passion for riding horses, barrel racing and building cars. Randy was an outdoorsman who loved to camp, hunt and fish. Randy's dreams would take him to many places over the years. His journey began when he joined the US Navy at age 18 where he discovered and grew in his love of the ocean and being out on the water. During enlistment Randy was stationed around the country and visited many places overseas. Randy wore many hats during his professional life including nuclear submarine engineer, firefighter, and eventually principal engineer for PG&E. Randy's dreams led him to Morro Bay, California where his journey continued. Randy started his career with PG&E as a Chemistry and Radiation Protection Technician in November of 1981. His responsibilities grew in Chemistry and Radiation Protection as he advanced into Supervisorial Roles. Randy had a longtime interest in computers and computerized processes. This led Randy to the second half of his career with PG&E. Randy's work in this area included chemistry process systems, emergency planning and response systems, and plant monitoring process systems. Randy retired as the Principal Power Systems Engineer in February of 2018
Randy was a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. Randy married his wife of 35 years Janet (Usilton) Johnson in April of 1988. Randy leaves behind his wife, Janet, four children, Neal Johnson (49) Honalee Johnson (46) Trevor Johnson (29) and Julianna Johnson (20) and six grandchildren. Randy was preceded in death by his parents Joyce Elaine Warner and Richard Lawrence Johnson, his brothers Ricky Johnson and Eric Johnson. Randy is survived by his brother Larry Johnson and his sister Glenda Merritt. Randy was well-loved by those who knew him. Randy was an active supporter of the performing arts. He was known for his profound sense of humor and sharp wit. His presence will be greatly missed.
To honor Randy's memory the family is holding a celebration of his life on July 16, 2023 from 12 - 4 p.m. at the Morro Bay Veterans' Hall (209 Surf St, MB). We invite anyone who knew Randy to attend and remember his wonderful life.

I wasn't able to get in touch and I knew something was wrong. You were like a big brother at PGE and I miss talking to you, your leadership, and times we attended events. Even after you retired you were there - helped me buy the Toyota in SLO - saw your BMW - i will miss our calls. Rest in peace my friend.

Randy was a kind person and a good soul. He had a positive outlook on life and a great sense of humor. I had the honor of working with him back in the day when hiring Chen and Rad techs. Randy will be missed and our prayers and go out to the family. Colette (and Chris) Joyce

My condolences to Randy's family.
It seems like I saw him just yesterday in Morro Bay.
The world of friends from the early days is getting smaller. Let's hope Randy is fishing somewhere and keeping an eye out for us.

One of my most cherished memories of Randy took place on the Pacific Ocean. I had the pleasure of joining Jimmy Nalin on his boat, the Seeker, for a fishing trip. As we sailed along, we unexpectedly encountered Randy and his companions in their craft. Randy sported an impressive 1920s-style hat that instantly brought to mind the grandeur of Hearst Castle. With his marine radio microphone in hand, he seemed completely immersed in the moment, relishing the rocking waves and skillfully reeling in albacore. Randy was truly a gem, and I feel privileged to have worked alongside him at Diablo Canyon. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. Randy, may you always have fair winds and following seas, my dear friend.
