Thomas Laurie Obituary

Thomas Robert Laurie, 68, of Morro Bay, passed away peacefully Friday, March 9, 2012, at his home, in the care of his family. Tom was born in May 1943 in Fontana, Calif., the son of Gilbert and Yetive Laurie. He also had two brothers, Andy and Bob, all of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in the beach town of San Clemente, Calif. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and attended UC Irvine, where he earned a degree in Physics. Tom married Nancy Norene Miller in August 1966. During their 22 year marriage, they had six children, Rena, Cora, Luke, Leroy, Glenda and Jim. Tom was a true Jack-of-all-trades; a lifelong surfer, master craftsman and photographer. He dabbled in everything, from hunting arrowheads to webpage design. He had a love of language and literature, and took pride in never being politically correct. Tom spent the last 17 years of his life with his partner, Valerie Seymour. They enjoyed outdoor recreation, fine food and travel. They built a commercial building on the waterfront in Morro Bay, The Front Street Inn and Spa, and later added their own home to the same building. Join us in a commemorative paddle out into the ocean to pay your respects and honor a man who always "stayed true to his school" at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, meet at the Cayucos Pier. A celebration of Tom''s life will follow at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Borradori Garage, 455 N. Ocean Avenue, (North of the pier) in Cayucos. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Patrick Swayze Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund at Stanford University.

Tom left us way too early, but he left indelible memories nonetheless. What a guy, what a man, what a friend.

Tom was an excellent friend to Lisa and me. He helped us adjust to the Central Coast when we moved here 12 years ago from Chicago. His surf lessons were "short"... seemed to always want to surf himself. :-). I enjoyed our golf outings and appreciated all of his help with handy man projects. Really going to miss him, especially when I hit that first tee shot on the golf course.

Tom was cool guy. So saddened by his passiing. I loved his way with words. We had a 20 year running joke about the skylights he put in my home. "Are they leaking yet?" Im really going to miss him.

Tom was one of the most amazing people I have ever known. My deepest condolences to Val and his family. That said, Tom lived life to the fullest, so I believe he would want us to celebrate his life and not be blue. He will be sorely missed but not forgotten.

Val, you and your family are in our hearts and thoughts. Adnan greatly enjoyed talking to Tom about the Palestinian situation and world politics in general, as well as their shared love of wood working. We will greatly miss Tom.

Tom will be deeply missed. He was a great boss, friend and teacher of life's values. I can honestly say, I would not have become the person I am today without him. He lives on in my heart and everything I build. Tom was a true soul and craftsman.

My father was a strong and loving man.I had the honor of being with him upon his last breath. I feel that he is with me everyday and i have learned to live each day to the fullest.Although he was an atheist i felt that angels were with us and he is now my guardian angel.
