Marijo Williams King, of Irving, Texas, beloved wife, mother, and Nanna, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, in San Marcos, Texas, at the age of 88. Marijo was born on February 14, 1937, in Irving, Texas, to Floyd and Esther (Evans) Williams. After graduating from Irving High School in 1956, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education at the University of Texas at Austin. At UT, she was very involved with her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, as well as many other campus organizations. She also earned a Master of Education with a Gifted and Talented Endorsement from the University of North Texas. Her legacy will be her loving children and their families, and the hundreds of children she taught throughout the years. Her greatest delights were spending time with her family, reading, sewing, knitting, and watching her grandchildren in sports, scouting, cheer, and other extracurricular activities. Marijo had an enthusiasm for life and a passion for always trying to make things better. She had an exceptional way of engaging with people that made them feel important and special. She also had a fierce advocacy streak and would passionately fight for what was right. Her constant and abiding faith in God was evident in her active involvement as a member of several churches throughout her lifetime, where she served as the Children's Day School Director, Vacation Bible School Director, and Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed serving in the women's ministries and various Bible studies. Marijo was known for her deep love for her family, her dogs, and Dr Pepper, not necessarily always in that order.
One cannot think of Marijo without her husband, Frank, who was always by her side. The two met and began dating while at the University of Texas. They married on June 20, 1959, and celebrated 66 years of marriage in June of 2025. Their love and commitment to each other and their family were an inspiration to all. Together, they weathered the storms and celebrated the victories of life as they raised their family. Throughout their years together, they lived in Austin, Mesquite, Irving, Granbury, San Antonio, and San Marcos, making a positive impact in each city where they chose to live.
Marijo had over thirty years of experience teaching students in first and second grade. The majority of those years, she taught at Brandenburg Elementary in Irving, Texas. Her classroom was spotlighted multiple times in the newspaper for its creative classroom design and full-size treehouse. Marijo was named the Teacher of the Year in the Irving Independent School District. Marijo also had a lifelong passion and involvement with the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, where she served as Grand Worthy Advisor, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the Nile, where she held many local, district and state offices.
Marijo is survived by her loving husband, Frank King of San Marcos, Texas, son Cullen King and daughter-in-law, Donna; son Jerold King (Ranie Nelson); daughter Marilee Mayhew and son-in-law, Paul Mayhew of San Marcos, Texas. Marijo is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Cameron King (wife Megan), Chelsea Campbell (husband Ian), Alyssa Sutton (husband Jacob), Jeremy and Jennifer King; William Mayhew (wife Johanna), Mariel Mayhew (fiancé Logan), Evan, and Harrison Mayhew. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren. Marijo is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Esther Williams, and brother William (Billy) Williams. Our family is also eternally grateful to the staff at Hays Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the incredible caregivers at Hope Hospice. Their care and compassion made an incredible impact on her final time here on earth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Marcos Animal Shelter, Hope Hospice, or the
charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held on August 23, 2025, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in San Marcos, Texas.
