Barbara Elna Gates Lodato Pilkington Smith went straight to heaven on October, 9, 2009. Barbara was born March 28, 1924 in San Mateo, California where she grew up and went to Burlingame High School.
Barbara is survived by her husband Hartley Smith, her daughter Linda Bartlett of Ben Lomond, CA, her son Craig Lodato of Genoa, NV, two grandchildren Amy Lodato and Lizy Liemandt and 4 great grandchildren.
Barbara worked in her father's clothing store, Robert Gates in Burlingame and later started a franchise in Saratoga called Gates of Saratoga in the 60's which is now the Blue Rock Shoot Cafe. She also worked at Joseph Magnin's at Tahoe and always won the highest sales awards.
She will be remembered by her caring spirit, always thinking of everyone, never forgetting birthdays and anniversaries. Her calendar was full of everyone's special days a year ahead of time. If Mother Teresa had a company, Barbara would have been the CEO. She also loved reading her Bible. If they had degrees for bible reading, she would have a PHD. In her later years she was unable to drive, so getting out was special for her. She would say that she knew she would run into someone whom God wanted to bless that day and go up and tell them. You would see their faces light up in utter joy and it would make their day.
Barbara will truly be missed by many many people.

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.
Thank you for sharing Barbara with me, as she was a great, great inspiration... I will never forget the Love that she had shown to everyone she met and she always greeted with a big smile and a huge hug.
