Founding editor of the Santa Cruz Express and the Santa Cruz Weekly, Leonard "Buz" Bezore passed away on March 6, age 68, after many years in declining health.
Buz was born May 4, 1945 in Santa Clara to Leonard and Norma Bezore. After high school he moved to Santa Cruz and worked at Cabrillo College. Bezore graduated from UCSC before going on to pioneer alternative journalism at many newspapers on the Central Coast and Silicon Valley.
A lifelong surfer and softball player, he moved from music critic to editor during an era of vigorous media activity and prosperity in the Santa Cruz downtown scene. He prided himself in being surrounded by writers whom he considered "the best," and he attracted colleagues who thrived on his searing wit and impeccable journalistic standards. Bezore was an accomplished chef, a passionate second baseman, a scholar of Maya history and American cinema. Much loved by the legions of writers, photographers, graphic designers, and fellow editors lucky enough to work with him, Buz left an indelible mark in hearts and minds. He was always true to his lifelong goal of spreading joy and revolution. A genuine original with an agile sense of humor, Buz burned brightly and left a rich and playful legacy.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Norma and Roy Cilia of Santa Clara; sister Lanni of Grants Pass, Oregon; brother Roy Cilia Jr. of San Francisco; son Christian and grand-daughter Rhiannon, both of Santa Cruz. Bezore was preceded in death by his wife Victoria, brother Randy and son Demian.
