Carley Nicholette Rios passed away Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Lucille Packard Children' Hospital after a courageous life long battle with cystic fibrosis. She was 13.
Carley was a generous selfless person who was willing to do all she could for others. She helped in various charity walks, including the Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis and the Relay for Life. She volunteered countless hours of her self and time to clinical studies to help find the cure for the disease she suffered from. For her generosity Carley was awarded the Hero of Hope Award and the Don Bosco Award.
Regardless of her illness, Carley was determined to lead a full life. When told she wasn't able to graduate from Moreland Notre Dame School, the staff and her fellow students rallied around her and this year she accomplished that dream. She dreamed of attending Stanford University to become a doctor, journalist or a lawyer.
Carley was a Junior Wildcat Cheerleader, played basketball with Moreland Notre Dame and PV Girls Softball.
She liked to sing, read and like all thirteen year olds, loved fashion. She loved the outdoors and everything it implies, including camping and going to the lake. She especially liked spending time in the Sveadal area of Santa Clara County.
Carley is survived by her mother, Miriam Edgar "Mono" Madrigal Gutierrez of Watsonville; father, Alfred Marina Rios of Watsonville; siblings, Karina Rios, AJ Rios, Kalah Guzman and all of Watsonville; uncles; Robert Gutierrez of Los Angeles, Geraldo Rios and Danny Rios both of Watsonville; aunts, Carmen Leta Gutierrez, Sandra Gutierrez, Veronica Juan Rios, and Marie Rios all of Watsonville, Victoria Frank Gonzalez of Aromas, Arley Phillip Long of Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands and Rosie Leo Martinez of Salinas; grandparents, Robert and Carmen Gutierrez, Alfred Rios and Rosa Rios all of Watsonville and her great grandmother Felipa Saldana of Salinas.
She was also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews that were loved and inspired by her. She was preceded by her aunt, Annabel Rios.
Visitation will begin at Mehl's Colonial Chapel from 2-6 p.m. and continue at St. Patrick's Church from 7-9 p.m with the Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20th . The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church Thursday, June 21st at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
In honor of Carley the family asks the funeral attendees to wear white and pastels to the services.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Carley Rios Donation Trust c/o US Bank #153493821398
She will be missed by all who knew, loved and were touched by her life and her great spirit. Her countless friends, that were like family, and only they know who they are, their closeness and love will never be forgotten by her mother.

Dearest Miriam, Remember when we surprised Carley with her 4th birthday party at the hospital that day? All she wanted to do while we were taking the halls in her wheelchair (so you could set up her room to surprise her) was to surprise you and to tell you "Dear Mommy, I love you..I love you dearly. I love you so dearly Mommy, Love Carley". She was as selfless as she was courageous..a truly rare person, as is her mama. I have had you both in my thoughts so often thru the years, even more so now. I share your grief Miriam, thank you for allowing me to be a friend to you and sweet special Carley. I will always carry her memory wth me, words cannot express how the two of you have touched me in my work and life.
