Dana Hayward Obituary

Dana Kieth Hayward passed away January 12, 2007 at his Capitola home after a brief illness. He was 57 years old.

A native of Malibu, he has lived in Santa Cruz County for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Herzog-Burt of Capitola.

Dana was the son of movie-star idol Louis Hayward and worked in his youth on films and TV with his father in the US and Europe. His achievements in Santa Cruz included Blore in Ten Little Indians which premiered the opening of Santa Cruz Actor's Theatre Dana's father was in the original movie version. He also worked on the remodeling of the present theatre from the Old Bear Republic Theatre. He also played a key role in Chris Mathews' "A Flag to Fly".

Dana was a wonderful teller of stories about the days in the 50's and 60's living on Malibu Beach, the movie stars that visited their home, and the famous friends of his father's, the movie idols of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Dana was instrumental in organizing and working and on the repair of the Seacliff Beach Cement Ship after it was badly damaged in the storms of '81-'82. He was recognized for his work by Sam Farr.

As an accomplished artist, he worked in many mediums, including Stained glass, painting, floral art and ceramics. His hobbies included a love for fishing, both from boats and from the Cement Ship, hence his keen concern to get it back opened up quickly. Dana's fishing poles were always with him 'just in case". In his youth, he surfed Malibu beach with some of the legends of the 60's era and also loved sailing, once sailed from Washington State to Belize in the Caribbean.

Funeral Services will be held at a later date. Santa Cruz Memorial Oakwood Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions preferred to Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks to the Cement Ship 1444 School Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.

Dear Dana;
I wish I could have met you. Your mother June Hanson Hayward was my mom's first cousin. I wish I could have known her as well. There was a secret veil wrapped around you and she. I knew your grandmother Vica Evans and we knew about you and your family. You were Less than a year younger than my brother who loves sailing. I am an artist, and I am sure we could have had do much to say to each other. Rest in peace dear Dana. I will see you in the after life.

I remember the job working with Dana on the Seacliff Pier. With his help and knowledge of building techniques we accomplished in one weekend of replacing appx 2200 linear feet of 4x12 green plate Doug fir decking. The crew so large it was ,organized by Dana and the friends Seacliff Area. Ffirst removed as we worked from the ramp toward the ship apps 60-70% of the decking timber. A chore State PArks could not have done alone. I was the Supervisor of the tsk that weekend and cried several times in Appreciation those folk and Dana. The help and support . A helping man a good man of good heart. Sincerely Thomas A Savage CSP retired.
