Emanuel Steward Obituary

DETROIT (AP) - Emanuel Steward, the owner of the legendary Kronk Gym and one of boxing's greatest trainers, has died. He was 68.

Victoria Kirton, Steward's executive assistant, says Steward died Thursday in a Chicago hospital. She did not disclose the cause of death.

The International Boxing Hall of Famer made his name training Thomas Hearns at the Kronk Gym in Detroit. That paved the way for Steward to work with a long line of champion boxers such as champion Lennox Lewis, during a big part of his title run, and current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko as recently as July.

Steward owned the legendary Kronk Gym, where his fighters were clad in red and gold trunks, and worked as an analyst for HBO.

I am not a fan of boxing. I knew Emanuel as a friend. He came into my life when I needed a friend 18 years ago. He was a great father figure to my two sons. We talked just about everyday. We had many nights having dinner, talking, singing, dancing and laughing. I will miss by best friend.

I am75 and have been inv olved with boxing since 1953. I boxed in Toledo, the Army, and in Detroit while attending the U. of Detroit. I was President of the Toledo Golden Gloves and on the Nat.GG Board and USA Olympic Boxing Committee. The most knowledgeable person I ever knew in my 59 years in boxing was Emanuel Steward. He was honest and always a gentleman. He often brought his boxers to Toledo and was a pleasure to deal with. To me, Emanuel Steward was the undefeated champion of boxing.
Sincerely,
Tom Falvey

Dear Family and Friends of Emanuel Steward,
I understand the pain of loss, may you all find comfort in what the Bible says of how Jesus Christ reacted to the loss of his dear friend Lazarus,.....when Jesus saw those weeping over the death of Lazarus, he “became troubled” and “gave way to tears.” (John 11:33-35, 38) Jesus did not consider it unmanly to shed tears in front of others. He felt their pain and shared their loss.

To hear of Emanuel's death is both shocking and sad. I'm an avid boxing fan, I'd enjoyed Manny's expertise on boxing while he commentated on countless HBO fights. I always looked forward to whenever Klitschko is scheduled to fight, he is so well trained and he is so disciplined, he was Manny's prized possession. I will definitely miss Emanuel Stewart, boxing will never be the same...so sad.

R.I.P. Emanuel, Gone but you'll never ever be forgotten.

We never met Manny...yet he had a profound influence on our lives and the lives of our students. We are a Martial Arts School, Yume Dojo, in Glendale Arizona. 25 years ago our Instructor suggested we start watching fights. Growing as an adult I had remembered Prof Manny(which we called him) from the Tommy Hearns days. So I started listening and studying everything he said, showed and talked about. He was my mentor, yet I never met him, but felt I knew him. We incorporated boxing into our daily workouts, refined our skills through other boxers but always listened to what Prof. Manny had to say. I have lost many of my martial art seniors, however this loss has hurt worse them all of them. The teachers and students of Yume Dojo want to send our condolences to the family, and people in Prof. Manny's life. He will always be a part of our school. Thanks and love for everything he gave to us
