Surrounded by his family, Jack Jensen passed away on August 16th, in Santa Cruz, following a short illness. He was born in Port Townsend, WA. to Leut. Commander Carl and Bernhild Jensen and moved to CA. when he was eight. He graduated from San Leandro High School and San Jose State University where he was on the swim team and a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. Jack taught school for thirty years and especially enjoyed his 7th and 8th grade math and social studies classes at Dartmouth Middle School in San Jose.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Georgia, his sister, Jean Cummins, his children, Karen Williams, (Bryon), Bill Jensen, Chris Jensen (Viki) and Blair Elliot, grandchildren Hopi and Gaia Jensen, John Williams, Christine Spaugh, (Hogan) and Brianna Sanchez (Geoffrey), and two great grandchildren, Aurora and Tanis Spaugh.
Jack was a devoted fan of San Jose State football and he and Georgia traveled all over the U.S. to watch the games. They were charter members of the Santa Cruz Chapter of the SJSU Alumni Association and both served on several committees for many years. They both loved to travel, and especially enjoyed their many trips to Europe where they visited relatives in Norway and Denmark and strolled the streets of their favorite city, Paris. Jack loved working in his garden with his roses getting extra care. He proved to be a talented woodcarver and created many wonderful Santa Claus's, animals and figures of old seamen. Jack shared his love of sports, adventure and the great outdoors with his family. Georgia and his children have fond memories of baseball games, football games, hiking and backpacking in the Sierra Mountains, fishing in the Monterey Bay and camping at Lake Alpine. He was an avid reader and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
A private celebration of life was held by his family. Donations in his name can be made to the Scholarship Fund of Santa Cruz Chapter of SJSU Alumni Association, P.O. Box 2037, Aptos, CA. 95003.
