Super Compassionate man. I'm sure he got that from his close relationship with Jesus.

Dear Mary & family. We met the Hammers through Mary & her love of cycling & other dear friends as a result. We had many years of RV camping with them, some very memorable. Joe was a master at driving & maneuvering the 5th wheel (getting it into the space at their house was something to watch!
Most memorable however was our long bike trip in France. Joe was the designated driver for the 7 of us cyclists; stopping at the local boulongerie for lunch supplies, chatting with the clerks (in spite of not speaking much French); the van was a welcome site at opportune times; maneuvering through narrow streets & tight predicaments in villages. What a memorable trip. Joe was a force not to be missed; opinionated, fun, interesting & a loving man. There will be a gap in our lives, not to be filled. We are proud to have met & befriended you & Mary. Love, Jon & Bette

Dear Hammer family.
I am very sad to hear of Joes passing, you have my deepest condolences.
I moved back to Calif. in 1977 with a newborn daughter , from Germany. Because of an obscure immigration law she could not become a US citizen by birth. I had to bring her to the US and raise her here, she had to speak English as a first language. Joe translated her foreign birth certificate and travel papers so I could start the process of her becoming a naturalized citizen of the US. With Joe´s help I started the process in 1977 and she was naturalized a couple of years later.
I could not have done it without his help. I appreciated his kindness.
I am so very sorry for your loss....
Love, kim okrant

Joe was with his wife Mary were critical to the foundation of Mountain Community Resources. From the first time we met them almost 40 yrs ago they were welcoming and so generous. His love was completely fulfilled by his wife Mary. They were dedicated to their Catholic faith, the people of the San Lorenzo Valley, and anyone in need. We will miss Joe at the 4pm mass at St John´s!
