Lura Crossley Obituary

Lura Hazel Crossley Feb. 2, 1925 - March 5, 2012 Lura passed away peacefully at her home in Greenbrae at the age of 87 after a brief illness. She was a strong willed, intelligent, independent woman who will be greatly missed. Lura was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma and raised in Dixon, Illinois. She earned a degree in Journalism with honors from the University of Illinois. Lura married C. F. Crossley, Jr. (Cap Jr.) and they lived in St. Louis, Newfoundland, and Salt Lake City before moving to Marin in 1952 where Dr. Crossley started his medical practice. The Crossleys were avid bridge players and founded the Marin Unit of the American Contract Bridge League in 1954. At the age of 34, Lura became the first woman in Marin to become a Life Master in Bridge. Divorced with four young children, Lura began a bridge business in her home in Greenbrae, sometimes directing as many as 80 bridge players. She taught bridge from Mountain View to Santa Rosa and directed bridge tournaments from Tiburon to Novato. Starting in the 1960's Lura worked as a bridge lecturer for Travel with Goren on numerous bridge cruises including five world cruises. She saw everything from the Great Wall of China to the pyramids of Egypt, but was most excited about her visit to the Galapagos Islands! In the 1970's Lura purchased the Greenbrae Rod and Gun Club and moved the Crossley Bridge Center there; her children Bob and Janet continue to operate it. Lura taught thousands of people to play bridge and touched the lives of countless others throughout the bridge world. She was generous with a kind heart and a keen sense of humor. Of all her numerous accomplishments she was proudest of the job she did as a single mother raising her children who all earned advanced degrees, as well as the accomplishments of her grandchildren. She is survived by her four bridge playing children William (retired) of Brazil, David of Las Vegas, Robert of Corte Madera and Janet of Greenbrae, eight grandchildren, and two great grand-children. A celebration of Lura's life will be held at the Crossley Bridge Center, 18 Greenbrae Boardwalk, Greenbrae, CA 94904 on March 31, 2012 at 3 p.m. Space is limited so the family is requesting that reservations be made in advance. Bob, Janet, so sorry to hear of Lura's passing. She was always one of my favorites -- I liked her so much, and she was always so nice to me --I played in her games over four decades. I will really miss her! It just won't be the same without her...

My sincere condolences to Janet, Bob and the Crossley family for the passing of Lura. Although I cannot say that I personally knew Lura that well, I have some fond remembrances of playing a few hands of bridge with her, and appreciating her wit and keen mind.

In 1968 Lura welcomed me into the Marin County Bridge family and made me feel completely at home. In most social activities there is always a few that create an environment that enables it to thrive and grow. In Marin County for both club and tournament bridge, for the past 60 years Lura Crossley has been the leader of those few. It seems to be such an understatement to say ‘she will be missed' but my vocabulary fails to provide better. Travel well Lura.

Lura was my mentor and friend. I will always cherish our conversations which amazingly enough, had nothing to do with Bridge. I went to Redwood high school with Dave and Bill and send my condolences to them and to Bob and Janet. She is a big name in the world of Bridge but I will always remember her as a strong minded yet compassionate person.

I started playing at the Crossley bridge club around 1968 or so .. and to me .. Lura was a larger than life person who was smart, witty, compassionate, and always in the moment.

This is a huge loss for the bridge world. She has done more than any other single individual for bridge in Marin County (IMHO).

More importantly, this is a huge loss to her immediate and extended family. She was so proud of all of them and their accomplishments.

I have been lucky enough to know all of her kids at one time or another and some of them have even been kind enough to play bridge with me.

I know she is in a happy place right now ... where director calls are only made to report unusually good sportsmanship, Howell movement cards are never required, and beginning players are always made to feel welcome.

Lura made the bridge world a better place. I truly miss her.

I regret that I only met Lura late in her life. I found her witty and entertaining and can only imagine how delightful it could have been to have known her in her prime! The bridge world will have a permanent void now she's not with us. Sincere condolences to the family.
