Maureen Carey Obituary

Maureen Carey
57 Year Santa Cruz Resident
Our sister, auntie, and friend Maureen Carey passed away on April 24, 2018. Maureen was a brilliant, creative, and generous soul. Maureen was born June 14, 1948 in Cornwall New York. She moved with her family from New York to Santa Cruz in 1961. Maureen graduated from UCSC. She worked at UCSC for 40 years plus as an archivist and book binder in special collections. Maureen enjoyed her job as an archivist. After graduating from UCSC, she later completed the UCSC Science Illustration Program in 1994. In addition to having many exhibitions of her work displayed in Santa Cruz County, she had the honor of one of her illustrations being accepted to a show at the Smithsonian. Maureen was generous with her time as well as donating to charities monthly for many years. Maureen was quick witted, had a brilliant mind, and gifted in so many ways. She was always there for family if they needed anything. To our sister, auntie, and friend you will be missed.
Maureen is survived by her seven siblings, Michael Carey, Christopher Carey, Cathleen Carey, Padriac Carey, Cormac Carey, Siobhan Carey, Conor Carey and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Many thanks and respect to those that helped Maureen, especially Hospice of Santa Cruz for their care and dedication to what they do, and the Sunshine Villa staff. Maureen's wishes are to have an Irish wake with family and friends to celebrate her life. "Carey on" Ree, you gave it a good fight!

I have such wonderful memories of all the times that Maureen was there for L'Oustalou [all those beautifully printed menues!], for family and friends, and most of all, for me. She had such an open and kind heart, along with a wicked sense of humor! Maureen introduced me to Quince Jam, and I intend to plant a quince tree in her honor.

I will miss you dear Friend.

Oh! My love and sympathy to all the family. I love Maureen, met her in 1975 during our McHenry Library tour-of-duty. Honest, loving, *funny*, and boy could she speak her mind! I admired her *so* much. I will never forget her chuckle, her brilliant, cutting, no-holds-barred insights. I haven't seen her in years, since we chatted in a parking lot downtown after Jeanne's passing. Three days ago I found myself unexpectedly thinking of her, seeing her face. Felt I must look her up, but it is too late: today I read this sad news.
Can someone in the family let me know if/when a memorial is planned?

My deepest sympathy to family and friends. I had the honor and pleasure to work with Maureen for many years. She did indeed give her time, expertise and talent generously to all endeavors, and life wisdom when needed for the topic, and made us laugh as well. She won't be forgotten and will be sorely missed.
