Pauline Ferrell Obituary

Family and friends will gather on January 25, to say farewell to a beloved wife and mother and devoted friend, Pauline Ferrell who passed away at Dominican Hospital at the age of 88. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee she married Ed Ferrell in 1972 and the couple lived on Button Street in Santa Cruz for their entire married lives. They owned and operated Ferrell's Donut Shop on Mission Street for many years. Pauline cherished the many friendships that were made at the shop including Clark Kerr, former president of the UC Systems and his wife Kay who would stay and talk with Pauline while Clark attended meetings. Many musicians (some who later became famous) were frequent patrons of the donut shop and Pauline enjoyed sharing stories with them too.Following the sale of the donut shop, Ed went to work for the County Office of Education and was the commissioner for middle school sports for 26 years. For more than 20 of those years, Pauline volunteered her time, working at the gates for sporting events at Harbor High. In her younger years, she and Ed loved to travel. They were avid hikers and enjoyed the times spent with family at their home in Lake Tahoe. She loved dogs and cats, and never met an animal that she did not like. She was a #1 San Francisco Giants Fan, and she and Ed would travel to Arizona for spring training games. One of Pauline's favorite memories was meeting Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera at a time her grandson was playing for the New York Yankees. Pauline's graciousness and generosity held no bounds. Many fond memories will continue to be shared of the Christmas bags stocked with food that she and Ed donated to Harbor High Families who were facing struggles and had little to eat. Pauline truly enjoyed giving these groceries to these families. Her favorite tagline, "Please everyone, let's get along" will continue to resonate with all those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ed Ferrell, her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Sally Carrithers of Molalla, OR; her daughter, Charlotte Carrithers of Portland, OR; stepdaughter, and step-son-in-law, Pam and Doug Coke of Sonora, CA; and her stepdaughter, Carrie Pavon of Livermore, CA. Her parents Leonard and Della Smith and her siblings preceded Pauline in death. A visitation will be on Wednesday January 25 at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Oakwood Memorial Park.

My heart goes out to all the family especially my friend Charlotte. She has so many of the loving qualities her mother so generously shared with those near her. Our mother´s devotion, courage, and respectful help us to do what is needed. Keep that love of this beautiful person close always. I am so grateful to have known her through her daughter´s eyes and connection.

I had the pleasure of being Pauline`s neighbor for over 10 years. I would play with her son Jim, James was a year older and would teach me how to play baseball football and basketball. I was so happy later when I heard that she had married my high school wrestling coach Ed Farrell. she was a real lady and her house was always immaculate. My sincerest condolences to Jim and my coach Ed. May the good Lord comfort you in this time of loss. Sincerely John Sha

My condolences to Ed and Charlotte and Jim. Pauline back in the 60-70's was our great neighbor as kids growing up. We could be rowdy and get in trouble at times in the neighborhood lighting fire crackers in fruit on the roof and letting it spray everywhere. Pauline always had a smile for us. She would always show me her black mina bird when I would give a knock on her door . Later I would see her at Harbor High sporting events with Coach Ferrell. Hi to Jim and Charlotte. Great Lady and neighbor.

Ed: My most heartfelt condolences for your loss, so sorry to hear about the passing of your wife. I don't know if you remember me from high school, you were my wrestling coach at Harbor High (1968-1971). My name is Frank Boze, my dad was a Santa Cruz police officer, he rode a Harley and visited your donut shops quite often, as did I and my friends. Again, very sorry for your loss. Frank
