Roger Fargeon Obituary

Roger Fargeon
September 25, 1944 - February 20, 2021
Aptos, CA
Roger passed away peacefully at home on Feb 20, 2021.
Roger lived an abundant life, rich in experiences and adventures. He was born in Cairo, Egypt, to Yvette and Victor Fargeon. His father died when he was a young child. In the 1950's he fled with his mother and sister to Italy in the wake of the Egyptian coup d'etat. They settled in Milan, and shortly after, he went to Israel where he joined other teenagers living on a kibbutz. He received a high school diploma by correspondence with a school in London. Back in Italy, he earned a Master's degree in French from Bocconi University of Milan. In 1971 he moved to New York and then in 1976 to San Francisco, where he enrolled at SF State and obtained an MBA.
Professionally, Roger held a wide range of jobs and owned several businesses, spanning advertising to fine giftware, art galleries, importing collector dolls from overseas, retail stationery and finally managing sales at Annie Glass. After retiring, he taught Italian for the Dante Alighieri Society of Santa Cruz where he served on their Board, and taught French both as a private tutor and at the Montessori School. He was also a volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium where he loved sharing stories about sea animals.
Roger was a true Renaissance man. An avid reader, he spoke 3 languages fluently, loved classical music and opera, and travelled extensively around the world.
Roger loved the natural world, dating from childhood summers spent at the Mediterranean Sea. He enjoyed boating, camping, hiking and tennis. He had a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Northern California coast, especially the areas of Big Sur and Santa Cruz.
To those fortunate to be his friends he was fiercely loyal. Roger was kind and non-judgmental, and always up for a deep conversation about history, politics and philosophy.
He leaves his sister Ginette Pizzorno, beloved companion Lila Steiner, and a devoted circle of friends. Per his wishes Roger was cremated. In his honor, he would want you to extend kindness to others and spend an afternoon hiking to give thanks for the beauty of our California Coast. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either your favorite charity or one whose work he admired: St. Jude, Stanford Cancer Institute and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
May his memory always be a blessing.

It was such a joy to work with Roger as a sort of informal coordinator of the Dante Alighieri Italian classes. But even more of a joy was to get to know this elegant and brilliant man. There have been none other like him, before or since.

Will I ever learn the Italian subjunctive? If not, it was not because Roger did not make a valiant attempt.
His classes at the Dante Society, Santa Cruz, were challenging and serious and joyful.
I am saddened to learn of h
is passing.
May his memory be a blessing.

I studied Italian with Roger via the Dante Society in Santa Cruz, at Beginner and Intermediate levels. Roger had a very interesting background, and was a kind teacher. I will remember him for many years to come.

We are so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. He was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word. He built the Annieglass wholesale business around the U.S. as our national sales manager. Our company extends our deepest gratitude and sympathy to his family and companion.
