David Ingalls Obituary

In Memoriam - David Ingalls
It is with great sadness that the Santa Fe Opera recognizes the passing of David Ingalls. David served on the Board of Directors for nearly 30 years. Through his genuine kindness and dedicated service, he earned the friendship and admiration of everyone who knew him.
David studied English at Yale University and then piano at the Cosmopolitan School of Music in Chicago. Later, he moved to Los Angeles where he taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District and became a member of the Board of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and LA Opera. Along with friend Reg Henessey, David co-founded Henessey & Ingalls, Inc., an art and architecture bookstore and publishing business. While in California, he raised his two sons, Glen and Stephen.
David retired from his business in 1993 and he and his wife Kay Duke Ingalls moved to Santa Fe. He joined the Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Opera shortly thereafter. He became Vice President in 1997, and in 2001, the Chairman. The Ingalls' home was the site for many grand musical parties that welcomed new casts each summer and entertained their numerous artist friends.
A generous contributor every year, David also supported two recent capital campaigns designating the General Director's Premiere Fund in the first, and the Stage Manager's Suite in the second. He was also a member of Board of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and a Lifetime Trustee of LA Opera.
The Santa Fe Opera extends heartfelt sympathy to Kay and the Ingalls family.

Ingalls family, my condolences for your loss. I encountered this page as I was searching for information on Ms. Ingalls, who was my mother“s (Jane Wells Long, from east Tennessee) friend and voice classmate at Northwestern in the 1950s.

In the early '60's my father designed a home for Mr. Ingalls in Baldwin Hills on Don Alegre. It was in a Mid-Century Modern Japanese-influenced style and situated on a partial slope with expansive views of Los Angeles to the north. I visited it once as a young child and recall the extensive use of wood on the interior, the varying floor levels, and the books within Mr. Ingalls private study. There was also an authentic tatami room located near the master bedroom. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls were gracious, gentle, and inspiring, and although not of Japanese descent their aesthetic appreciation of the culture was evident. My best to the family during this time.

I first met David (and Kay) when i was the executive director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and he was a trustee. I had the pleasure and honor of working with him in the 80s and 90s in Los Angeles. After my tenure it was so wonderful to stay in touch with David and Kay sharing our interest in music and books. It was fun to visit them in Santa Fe after their move. David's wisdom, kindness, and passion for the arts made him a perfect trustee and patron. David and Kay together were sought after friends and co-conspirators. Im so happy he had such a long and fulfilling life. The world is smaller without him.
much love to his family and especially Kay.

David was my junior high school English teacher in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. I remember him as a charming if somewhat eccentric gentlemen who was then engaged to be married (and very excited about it) and drove a Citroen DS. How delightful to learn about his long and fulfilling life!
