KEZHUANG ZHAO Obituary

KEZHUANG ZHAO
JUNE 23, 1954 - JULY 13, 2024
Santa Fe - Kezhuang Zhao, known to most as just "Dr. Zhao," passed away on July 13, 2024, in Santa Fe. Dr. Zhao was a beloved part of the Santa Fe community, providing acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services for thirty-five years.
Dr. Zhao was born June 23, 1954, in Sichuan, China. Despite being an exceptionally bright student, at sixteen he was sent to the countryside as part of the decade-long Chinese political movement, known as the Cultural Revolution, that restricted access to higher education in favor of farming. Even in the countryside, his kindness and intelligence stood out, and he was selected as a teacher for rural children instead of having to work in the fields. The school was in an old, abandoned Buddhist temple without school supplies. Dr. Zhao not only taught all subjects to his students, from Math to Chinese to PE to Music, but he also provided hygiene services like haircuts to the children. To the end of his life, he never forgot the names of the children he taught.
Upon leaving the countryside in 1973, Dr. Zhao attended physician assistant school in Sichuan, where he became faculty after his graduation. As a teacher, Dr. Zhao brought his students to extremely remote areas around Sichuan to provide care for rural farm families who otherwise had no access to medicine or doctors. He saved many lives in those years, but also witnessed extreme poverty and its impact on the rural population.
When the Cultural Revolution ended in 1977 and universities across China fully reopened to all applicants, Dr. Zhao participated in the "Gao Kao," a national university entrance exam. The Gao Kao of 1977 and 1978 were unique in that they were unusually competitive, as the applicant pool consisted of ten years' worth of high school graduates seeking to fill limited university spots. Despite only receiving a formal secondary education at the junior high level, Dr. Zhao was admitted to and enrolled at Chengdu College of Chinese Medicine in 1978, where he graduated in 1983 with a medical degree. During his five years as an undergraduate, Dr. Zhao not only excelled academically-he was always at the top of his class-but he also devoted his time and big heart to the service of his fellow students. Five years in a row, he was elected as Student Council President, and he was tremendously respected and admired by his fellow classmates. His sudden passing caused widespread shock, grief, and sadness throughout his university alumni community.
In 1988, while pursuing his Ph.D. in botanical pharmacology, Dr. Zhao was invited to teach acupuncture and TCM in Gothenburg, Sweden. While he lived and taught acupuncture in Gothenburg, he developed a lifelong connection with Sweden, and he often returned to Sweden to give lectures and visit his Swedish friends, who became like family.
From Sweden, Dr. Zhao relocated to the United States, arriving in Santa Fe in 1989, where he was joined by his wife in 1990 and his daughter in 1992. For many years, he taught acupuncture and TCM at a local school of Chinese medicine. His students remember Dr. Zhao's teaching style as reflecting his sense of humor and his understanding of one's balance with nature, life, and health. During his 35 years in Santa Fe, he also built a respected acupuncture and herb practice and helped countless patients in their healing journeys.
Dr. Zhao is survived by his wife, Yan; his daughter, Faye, son-in-law, Justin; and his father and sister in Chengdu, China.
A viewing and memorial, followed by a celebration of life, will be held on August 3, 2024. For more information on time and location, please visit rivera.mykeeper.com/KezhuangZhao

I met Dr.Zhao shortly after he arrived in Santa Fe in 1989; introduced by my friend Kamala (Linda Fordham) who was also a gifted healer who employed a multiplicity of techniques. I immediately took to the unassuming acupuncturist and herbalist and along with my young sons became his patient during times when I needed help with what at the time seemed intractable problems such as my sciatica. I have the distinct memory of Dr. Zhao telling me that acupuncture wasn't able to cure everything but it was effective with sciatica and also with the pain I was experiencing at that time in my lower back. After a few weeks of treatments my lower back pain disappeared and since then has never reappeared. and the sciatica I suffered from was greatly reduced, as well. Most importantly, I felt that in addition to his learned treatments, Dr. Zhao's caring prewsence was in and of itself a healing balm with which he blessed all of his patients. In this time of mourning, I wish his wife and daughter the memory of the comfort that I'm certain each of them received from this extraordinary man.

I was shocked to hear about Dr. Zhao's passing. I went to him regularly for over 25 years and he was always to kind and always willing to help. He was the only doctor that could help me with a chronic cough that I get every year. I was just getting ready to call to see him again. My condolences to his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

It's shocking to me to hear Dr. Zhao passed away in The New Mexican this morning. Last time I saw him in 2023, there was no sign of illness on him.

I have known Dr. Zhao for over 30 years. As the same professional practice TCM Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Santa Fe/Los Alamos NM, I have never heard Dr. Zhao is gossipy or unkind to any other practitioner, but focuses on his patients. Humbled, despite having a good reputation in the community.
He is too young at 70, he is too early to leave us, he dies for his patients. No, he does not die. He is living in thousands, thousands of patients' hearts and lives Forever.
Sending profound condolences to Dr. Yang Yan, family and loved ones.
Proud of you, Faye, your father's unique enterprise spirit under the 1960 -1980's era in China, you have already carried on in America !
Love

To his family, I am truly sorry to hear about Dr.Zhao's death. I had been a regular patient for the passed 23 years and he was the one who cured me of West Nile where the spoon was two heavy to lift up. I had last seen him about 5 weeks ago and as he would (we take care of it) and was his usual self. He will be greatly missed by our community and myself. I hope those who studied under him will have the knowledge and understanding he had no matter the problems.

I am indeed very sad and shocked to hear of Dr Zhao's passing! He was a pillar of our community and so helpful to hundreds and hundreds of people's health and well being. He will be sorely missed but most of all there will always be so much vast love and respect for the great work he did whole on this earth. He is a great inspiration to me and to many many others. Thank you Dr Zhao. My condolences and love to your family and friends. We will miss you!!!.

I was one of Dr. Zhao's early patients in Santa Fe. I remember him making all of his own herbal remedies and hearing stories of his daughter and her cat. He did extra consulting with relatives to try to reverse a significant hyperactive thyroid condition but never suggested that he could 'cure' me, but that he would try. Always honest.
Such a gentle person with a great sense of humor will be missed by me and others not just because he was a healer but also because he became a positive part of our lives. My condolences to his wife and daughter.

I have known and have seen Dr. Zhao on and off over the years since 1992.
Just one year ago, I had a sciatic episode that rendered me unable to walk.
He corrected the problem in one treatment.
No one can walk in his shoes. He was a talented and compassionate doctor.
I cannot imagine the grief his family is feeling at this time. Some people should live forever. I am eternally grateful for all the exceptional care I received over the years. I extend my deep condolences to Dr. Zhao's family.

I believe that I began seeing Dt. Zhao about 30 years ago. From the first visit, I had complete confidence in his treatments. Always calm, focused and humble, Dr. Zhao had the perfect intelligence and temperament for healing. I had just returned to see him for a chronic issue this summer and was looking forward to weekly treatments. Just prior to his 70th birthday, I thanked him for continuing to practice medicine as he has helped me so much over the years. Dr. Zhao's passing is such a great loss to his family, patients and the Santa Fe community. Love and condolences to Dr. Yang, Faye and Justin. and to his family in China.

I´m shaken from the news of Dr Zhao's passing. I´ve had many teachers in my life but only the outstanding ones challenged my mental aptitude. Dr Zhao was unique in that he occupied both my mind as well as my heart. I felt privileged to be taught by a man who exemplified what my western mind saw as a nothing less than a Daoist Master. During a field trip to the Pecos, every single plant that the students picked and held up for the good Dr to see, he effortlessly explained its name, it´s uses, contraindications, and properties. No one could stump him. In the classroom he would write complicated herbal formulas while facing the class with his engaging and somewhat mysterious smile. The documentary about his life skimmed the highlights of his genius, but couldn´t convey how warm and human he was. I tear up while writing this.
Condolences to Dr Yang, his daughter and his family.

Dr. Zhao was my acupuncturist for seven years. When my husband and I moved to Santa Fe in 2016, I found his office right away and was so grateful to have a caring and brilliant healer in my own neighborhood. He didn't say much, but his treatments were so powerful and created positive change in my body and mind. When I was pregnant with my son, I came to Dr. Zhao every few weeks and it was my saving grace. I brought my newborn to his office as soon as he was born for my first treatment post-birth. I always felt safe and in gentle and caring hands. He then got me through another pregnancy with my daughter. It was such an important part of my care at the time. Every time I came in, he asked me about my son and my husband and I would always ask about his family. He had a sweet laugh and was so kind. I am devastated to hear of his passing and also comforted to hear of his legacy and incredible history that I knew nothing about. His healing touch will live on in our community and we are all better for having known him.
