RODMAN SHARP Obituary

RODMAN A. SHARP Born February 16, 1930 Rodman A. Sharp died on November 4, 2012 at the age of 82 after suffering several years from Alzheimer's disease, remaining his kind and gentle self to the very end. He was president and CEO of three successful high-technology start-ups: Sharp Laboratories - radioactivity measuring systems for medical research; Oceanographic Engineering - undersea vision and robotics for oceanographers and the offshore oil industry; and Computer Peripherals - very large computer disk drives for on-line banking and airline reservation systems. He was co-founder of Amtech Corporation which invented and became the world leader in electronic identification technology for the tagging of rail cars, ocean containers and motor vehicles. Working with the same group of managers and investors, Rod was also a founder of Blockbuster Corporation. Other technologies he worked with were clinical diagnostics, medical imaging, surgical tools, lasers for making flat panel displays, new kinds of optical glass, telescopes for astronomers, water purification, pet thermometers, geothermal heated fish farming and radio controlled toys. His parents, Marie Horning Sharp and Alton B. Sharp reared him in Wellesley, Massachusetts and he attended Milton Academy. Rod earned an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard in 1951. When he couldn't get into anywhere else with that experimental degree, he continued his studies at Harvard, winding up with the first and (after they looked at his dissertation) the last diploma Harvard has granted in Nuclear Chemistry. Before entering private industry with General Atomic in San Diego, he did basic research in high energy nuclear reactions at Brookhaven National Laboratory following a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship with the Central European Nuclear Research Agency (CERN). He is survived by his wife, Emily Zants of Santa Fe, NM; children: Lesley Sharp of New York, NY, Paula Sharp of Mt. Kisco, NY, Erik Sharp of Jamaica Plains, MA; grandchildren: Julio Wasserman-Sharp and Alex Sharp-Fox; brother, Steven Sharp of Seattle, WA. Two trusts were established in his name for undergraduate scholarship funds for international students, one each at Harvard and at Stanford Universities. He was a strong supporter of the Santa Fe Symphony. Following his request, there are no services planned. Rod and his son Eric visited my family farm in 1975. I have a beautiful letter he wrote and a photo of my father and uncle on a old tractor that he took when he visited. Its one of my favorite photos. May his memory be for a blessing.

Rod and I grew up in the same neighborhood and church group in Wellesley,MA. Even then we knew he was bright and would become someone special. He was one of our group and certainly helped us in our studies as we struggled through geometry and other maths together. Rod was a good friend and liked by all. I knew his family well also and had many a good meal there as his mother was a marvelous cook and his dad a good hunter who came home with quail, etc. I remember it all with pleasure. The world has lost a bright star.

It was my privilege to know Rod from the time he married Emily. These two very talented people shared love, respect, and many rewarding interests for several years before Rod's illness. We send condolences to Emily and his family. May each of you receive many of God's blessings as your lives continue through the grief of your loss.
