James Carroll Obituary

James Michael Carroll

1949 - 2024

James Michael Carroll was released into glory on Friday, January 26, 2024, at the age of 74. He was born in Gilroy, California to Austin E. Carroll and Cora Merle Carroll. James was preceded in death by his two brothers, John Carroll and Jerry Carroll, and his step-sister, Joyce Howorth.

James was the beloved husband of Laura Carroll for 22 years. He is survived by his daughter Amanda Carroll, his son Timothy Carroll (Ashley), one niece Deborah Howorth of Paso Robles, California, and Barbara Carroll of Santa Maria, California. James has two granddaughters, Jaycee and Addelyne Carroll of Folsom, Louisiana.

James grew up in Central California and attended Santa Maria High School, and graduated from Allan Hancock College specializing in law enforcement. While getting his education, he worked at various jobs, but his favorite was working for Shakey's Pizza in Santa Maria, California. Then he began his law enforcement career at the age of 21. James served 39 years in the department.

In James' law enforcement career, he accomplished numerous goals. James had the opportunity to hold the position of Detective before he was quickly promoted to the rank of Sergeant which placed him in charge of his first S.W.A.T. Team for Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Departments. He was also in charge of the Santa Maria Narcotics and Intelligence Unit for many years. This position allowed him to gain professional respect and recognition with various law enforcement agencies, such as DEA, FBI, and Secret Service. He was invited to attend and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virgina. He and his entire S.W.A.T. Team were assigned to the White House Special Detail Unit for President Ronald Reagan.

On James off time, he enjoyed racing Nostalgia Drag Racing, which was sponsored by the Deputy Sheriff's Department, and later by the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycles and his ATV. Upon retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed ocean liner cruises which allowed him and Laura to explore the world. Considering the hundreds of destinations while cruising, it is hard to choose his favorites, but they were probably, Italy and Spain. He created so many memories all of which will be cherished.

Condolences to Jim and family. I am very sad to hear of his passing. Going way back, I had the pleasure and privilege to work with Jim and Barbara. I was just a young kid but just like yesterday, I can remember what a kind man and kind smile that Jim had. Many laughs and good memories for sure. Eternal peace be with you our friend.
