Vicenta Cuevas Obituary
VICENTA ZAVALA CUEVAS
APR. 1, 1927 - APR. 2, 2008
Vicenta Zavala Cuevas, 81, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2008, at Marian Medical Center.
Vicenta was born on April 1, 1927 in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico. She moved to Texas at the age of 16 working various jobs, including housekeeper for The Ed Block Family in Harlingen, Texas. Harlon Block, Ed's son, was recognized as one of the servicemen depicted in the Iwo Jima flag raising photograph. Learning the history of Iwo Jima through The Block Family gave her an appreciation of the sacrifices that soldiers make for our freedom and the value of being a resident of the United States of America.
Vicenta married Pedro P. Cuevas on February 23, 1957 in Weslaco, Texas. They moved to Santa Maria in 1958, where they settled and raised their 6 children. Mrs. Cuevas was a hardworking, disciplined wife and mother with a wonderful sense of humor. She placed the needs of her family above the comfort of her own self. She will be remembered for her wonderful cooking and sweetened iced tea. She was a breast cancer survivor of 23 years. She was a grandmother figure to many and was known and loved as "Grandma Kibby."
Vicenta is survived by her husband of 51 years, Pedro P. Cuevas, children: Catalino (Roxanne) Cuevas of Hanford, Jae (John) Cuevas Sharp of Santa Maria, Cirilo Cuevas of Santa Maria, George (Autumn) Cuevas of Santa Maria, Ernesto (Suzanne) Cuevas of Santa Maria, and Marta (Paul) Cuevas Broberg of Bend, Oregon, grandchildren: Daniel Rush, Jr. of Hanford, Michael Cuevas of Clovis, Darrik Cuevas of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Skylar Broberg of Portland, Oregon, Shelby Broberg of Bend, Oregon, Augusta, Amara and Brance Sharp, Rae Cuevas, Gabriella and Allison Cuevas of Santa Maria, brothers: Faustino Zavala of Sanger, Frank Zavala of Santa Maria, John Zavala of Santa Maria, Domingo Zavala of Santa Maria, and Margarito Zavala of Santa Maria, sisters: Cruz Cavazos of Santa Maria and Maxine Del Rio of Santa Maria and numerous nieces and nephews.
