David J. Pitkin CHESTERTOWN - David J. Pitkin, retired teacher and local author died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at his home in Chestertown. Son of Corliss and Mary (Carney) Pitkin, he was born in Corinth, NY, on March 7, 1939. Graduating from Corinth Central High School, the State University in Albany and Goddard College in Vermont, he held a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, a Master of Arts in Social Studies Education, and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology. He is survived by a brother, Joseph (Jeanne) Pitkin of Hagaman, NY; four sisters, Susan M. Lee of Clifton Park, Nancy (Christopher) Clark of Berwyn, PA, Maureen Draganchuk of Middletown, NY and Jacqueline VanNoy of Edmonds, WA. He had three children: Lisa Pitkin of Altamont, NY, Daniel Pitkin of New York City, and John Pitkin of Parsippany, NJ; and, two grandchildren, Noah and Naomi Pitkin of Altamont, NY. He is also survived by a dear companion Diane Wood, of Lake George. Pitkin received several honors during his 36-year teaching career, including an honorary 1961 brigadier-generalship in the Sullivan County (NY) Militia for his school-wide Civil War Centennial program in Eldred, NY. He taught at both Oriskany and Holland Patent High Schools in central New York State, and during that time co-founded the Battle of Oriskany Historical Society and the Oriskany Village Museum. In 1967-8 he created and produced “The Battle of Oriskany,” a sound and light recreation at the 1777 battlefield. Additionally, he worked as a laborer on the Ft. Stanwix archaeological excavation in Rome, NY, in the late sixties. During his final 25 years of teaching in Saratoga Springs, David was also a religious education teacher at St. Peter's Catholic Church. He was co-founder of Give A Child Christmas in the city in 1971. He also helped establish Parapsychology Study and Investigations, a paranormal research and educational group in Saratoga during the 1970s. For over twenty-five years he also served as a numerologist, providing spiritual counseling, and later writing a book on the subject. Upon retirement, he wrote his first book of collected Saratoga County ghost stories, which proved a success. Since then, he has written and published eight more books in that genre. He created his own small publishing company, Aurora Publications, in Chestertown, where he lived most recently. He often appeared as an authority on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory late night radio show, often appeared on Forum 13, a WNYT-TV interview program in Albany, and was a popular storyteller throughout New York State. He was the subject of a feature article in the August 2012 issue of Yankee Magazine. Funeral services will be conducted at Densmore Funeral Home, 7 Sherman Avenue, in Corinth on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Visiting hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3 with the Rev. Clayton Burgess officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. I had the honor of meeting David when I worked at Borders... I regret not being able to tell him my ghost stories... I know he would've been intrigued... May he rest in peace...

David and I went to write the ghost story of Susan B. Anthony at her childhood home located in Battenville, NY with intuitive Sue Wilson. He was very intrigued with the story and included it in his New York Ghost book! I will cherish that memory always! He used two other of my leads and I called him my friend. When he sent me a message of having stage 4 cancer I was shocked and saddened. My sympathies to his family and Diane, who is a great editor, for their loss.

I never got to meet David Pitkin, but I so enjoyed reading his books. An interview with him appeared in Yankee magazine not all that long ago, and in it he expressed interest in what would come after this life. I hope his transition has been a joyful one full of learning and understanding.

There are few people who touch our lives as powerfully as David Pitkin touched mine. I personally loved his inquisitive mind and really appreciated all the research he put into finding answers. He was a man with deep passion for seeking answers to the intangibles of Life. A very spiritual man who worked out of his heart center who shared his findings through his writing, his workshops, his conferences, his tours and teaching. I participated in his A.R.E. group and for 9 wonderful years participated in his Dream workshop, (branched off of Montegue Ullman's works). We all did such great work orchestrating and interpreting dreams together. I sensed your presence David, looked you up online and found your obituary. Thank you for visiting and may you find all your answers in the ever after. The date of your passage over to the other side reassured me that you are at home with your Maker...the number 3 represents the Holy Trinity. God Bless You through your journey. I always love you and will never forget you. Love & Light, Deborah Zarrett

Dear sweet David Pitkin,.... yes, a great storyteller with a beautiful unique way about him. I knew him to be such a spiritual man who was intrigued by the mystery of life. He searched and researched all the intangibles of life and was a great leader to all of us who have like interests. I was in his Edgar Cayce study group, A.R.E. and for 9 wonderful years in his Dream Study group (a branch group off of Monteque Ullman's works.) I miss you and may you find all your answers in the ever after. God Bless. PS: I sensed your spirit around me, looked you up online and just found your obituary. I will never forget you. David was an incredibly amazing Spirit in a thoroughly Human Incarnation. I had the privilege of knowing him through years of membership in a "Search for God" study group. I'd written him recently, not knowing of his illness. Now, I'm sad to say his lack of response is explained. His star will continue to burn bright through, not just through his writtings and guest appearance and tours but through all the many people whose lives he touched as Father, Husband, Teacher, Author & Friend. I know his presence and essence will continue to comfort his loved ones! Peace.

Mr. Pitkin was "one of the great ones!" He was an amazing teacher to me in Saratoga. I actually let him use his acupuncture needles on my hand to show the class. He also made class interesting and was a true gentleman. My prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

David spoke on multiple occasions to groups I have been involved with and also was a visitor to our home. He was willing to share his time and, more importantly, his great enthusiasm with those he interacted with. My sincere condolences to the Pitkin family.

David Pitkin was a presenter and great friend to my spiritual Reading Group. His Numerology workshop which he gave in December 2011 was stellar -- truly inspirational! I sent David a series of (funny)"Get Well" cards during the last 6 months of his illness -- I hope these cheered him up a bit. We can take comfort in knowing that David is now in a place of light and love and peace -- his true home. And that David is joined to us all in love. I send my prayers and healing energy to his family and friends. With deepest sympathy,

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and also to all of his favorite readers of all ages.

David was an inspiration to me. As a paranormal investigator, David taught me how to open my mind to the spirit world. He always took the time to talk and answer questions. I am proud to have met him so many times and to have had the chance to talk to him and learn from him. He will be missed, but he is now in a place where he will be just as admired and loved.

David was my cousin and good friend. I visited Corinth, NY regularly as my (and his) grandparents lived there. As kids we wandered the hills and dales and had fun at the nice community beach. Those were exciting days as we played revolutionary soldiers, explorers together with his brother Joe. They were good students and inspired me to work harder. I will miss him very much. May he be with God.
