Dean Martin Obituary

Dean William Martin SARATOGA SPRINGS - Dean William Martin of Saratoga Springs passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Troy, NY on March 22, 1945, the son of the late Earl and Rita (D’Auray) Martin. He is the loving husband of his childhood sweetheart Donna (Mannino) Martin who he married in 1968. Dean started his career in the major appliance business and later joined the family business, Martin Deposition Services, which he ran until his retirement in 2009. In 1955 at the age of ten years old, Dean was in a fire that burned sixty-five percent of his body. Dean spent six months in St. Peter’s Hospital and each day his parents were told he would not survive the night. The news of the tragedy spread nationally and he received letters and gifts from celebrities and athletes, most notably gifts from his namesake Dean Martin who also paid for many of his sixteen surgeries. Dean also received a ball signed by all of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers upon winning the World Series that year. A true survivor, Dean said at that time his only thought was to get outside and play baseball. Dean proved a survivor again with his twenty-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis which he bravely fought until the end with the help of his devoted wife. Dean enjoyed watching the NY Giants with his sidekick and loving son Michael, playing golf, listening to music and dining and socializing with his many friends in Saratoga Springs, but he most enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife Donna and was overjoyed to see his grandson Max every day after school. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Gail Martin. Dean is survived by his wife Donna, his children Michele Martin and Michael Martin of Saratoga Springs, his son-in-law Sergio Sanchez (Darcie), his grandson Max Sanchez, his brothers Dennis (Sheila) of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Wayne (Kathy) of Latham, and many nieces and nephews. Known for his great kindness, gentle demeanor and amazing sense of humor, Dean will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the health care providers at The Eddy, Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Hospice, and all those who provided such wonderful and loving care for him during his illness. Relatives and friends may call at William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff, Inc. Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY on Monday, April 13 from 4-8 p.m. and a mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dean’s name to Community Hospice of Saratoga Springs, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs. Online remembrances may be made at burkefuneralhome.com.

Donna, Sorry to hear of Dean's passing. Whenever I think of him, I'm reminded of the time we took the elevator in a hotel in Pittsfield and a man got on the elevator with a tiny dog and Dean said "The Dog's name has to be FiFi."
DeanO was a great guy with a great sense of humor and will be missed by many.
