Robert Christopher Obituary

Robert “Duke” Christopher SARATOGA SPRINGS - Retired Saratoga County Commissioner of Social Services, Robert “Duke” Christopher passed away at his home at the age of 68 on August 14, 2015, after a long illness. A humanitarian by nature, he was always willing to help anyone in need. When someone had a problem they could count on Duke for good advice and discretion. A man who loved to hear other people tell their stories, he was a “listener.” He was deeply committed to his post as Commissioner of Social Services and continually sought ways to better serve and help the people of our community. He was a graduate of the University at Albany having worked full-time while attending. A true Saratogian, Duke loved horse racing, the energy of the racing season and the history of the city. He and his wife traveled all over the world where he always sought out a race track. In his opinion, none ever met the standard of “Saratoga.” Duke was a competitive cyclist and speed skater having accumulated many trophies’s and medals in both sports. He was gifted in connecting with people through his gentle nature, warm smile and sense of humor. Most of all, he cherished his wife, children and grandchildren. He was the one to swim with the kids when it was freezing out, get buried in the sand at the beach or just play catch. By carrying out traditions such as delivering bagels to his children and grandchildren on Sunday mornings or helping his wife entertain for family and friends, he maintained close relationships with the people that mattered most to him. In today’s busy world, he also led by example with his appreciation of the little things in life that are so easily overlooked including the sound of rain on a tin roof, bird watching and the peacefulness of shoveling snow. The son of the late Richard and Catherine Christopher, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eileen Bishop Christopher and his children Dr. Erin Christopher-Sisk (James) and Ryan Christopher (Helen) and his grandchildren, Calleigh Sisk and Lexton Christopher. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Christopher, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and numerous cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Duke at St. Mary’s Church (167 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa) on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at 1pm. There will be no calling hours. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave.,Saratoga Springs. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Duke, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga and Washington Counties, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.

I worked at State DSS and knew Bob as Commissioner Christopher; I knew a lot of local commissioners and liked most of them, but Bob was particularly memorable. He would call me occasionally looking for legal guidance in his official capacity as Saratoga County's DSS Commissioner. I got to know Bob as a true "straight shooter", one who wouldn't try to tailor facts to his advantage but would tell things as he knew them, and would seek to find a solution that honestly met the needs of those that he served. He was a humble guy who listened, and Saratoga County was diminished by his retiring and the world is diminished by his passing. My heartfelt best wishes to his friends and family, I know they must miss him.

Eileen and Family
I am heartbroken for you all. I have know Duke my entire life. He was best friends with my brother Chuck growing up. He would come to our house every morning before school and wait shyly on the couch for Chuck to get ready. He graciously entertained all us smaller kids.
I remember well him working full time for my Dad driving the oil truck while he was going to college. He had his books and papers with him everyday and had them out studying in the office, or pulled over on the side of the road in Greenfield somewhere, every chance he had. He worked hard for that degree.
From the time I was about 8 or 10, he took me and my brother John on the truck with him every Saturday. They were the best days of my life! He was so good to us kids and to my Mother, Father, Grandmother, and Grandfather all through his life.
I had the privilege as a 9 year old boy, of being an alter server at your wedding and remember that day fondly.
Duke was the kindest, gentlest man I've ever know.
Our family will hold him and all of you in our hearts and prayers forever as one of our own.
May you find peace in knowing that Dukes kindness touched countless lives, and in all the happy memories you created together.

Dear Eileen and family,
We are all very sorry over the loss of Duke, yet are thankful to have known him for many years. Always a personable gentleman and a professional administrator, he was as down-to-earth as one could be. Further, we always admired his humble and sincere style, a rarity today.
We can believe he is resting and smiling in peace, for he did much for others in his life; those that he knew and many he had never known.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
