Samuel McElroy Obituary

BALLSTON SPA - Samuel W. McElroy 81, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 21, 1941, to Samuel W. McElroy and Wreatha Weiss McElroy.Sam was a steamfitter for General Electric Co for 36 years, retiring in 2001. He was the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 1 in Ballston Spa and also served as Scout Commissioner and District Commissioner. Sam was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and George S. Meany Award the highest awards given to honor a person's significant contribution to Boy Scouts. He also served as Commissioner of Pop Warner Football.Sam married his childhood sweetheart, Elaine LaPoint on February 26, 1961. Together they rode their Harley Davidson motorcycles and traveled throughout the country. Sam was a handyman, there was nothing he couldn't build or repair.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Elaine, and his siblings Anna Mae Conklin, Marvin Weiss, and Rosemary Greenwood. Sam is survived by his children Samuel J. McElroy (Beth), Sandra Bellinger, and Carol Taylor; grandchildren Nicole E. McElroy (Thomas), Samuel A. McElroy, Connor P. McElroy (Cecelia), Jodi Mulvaney, Joseph Bellinger, Joshua Bellinger, Stephanie M. Taylor (Brian), and Robert W. Taylor; great grandson Brendan; sisters Linda Yager (Nelson) and Norma Myers; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Monday, February 13 from 4pm to 7pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9:30am Tuesday, February 14 at St. Mary's Church, 167 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ballston Spa.Memorial contributions in memory of Sam may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306.Online remembrances may be made at www.armerfuneralhome.com https://www.lastingmemories.com/samuel-w-mcelroy

My heart goes out to all who loved Sam. What a joy it was to work with Sam at Scout Roundtables, camporees, Order of the Order events, and especially summer camp at Camp Saratoga! Sam was an inspiring leader and a great friend.
