Died: July 26, 2023
Edward F. Schweiss, 98 of Sterling died Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Rock River Hospice & Home.
He was born on May 27, 1925 in Moline, the son of Edward Albert and Grace Eleanor (Williams) Schweiss. He served honorably in the US Navy in WW II on the USS Trumpeter Destroyer Escort from 1943 -1946. Ed married the former Connie Nichols on June 17, 1950 in Sterling. She died March 23, 2017. Ed had worked for 41 years at Lawrence Brothers retiring as Credit Manager. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Sterling American Legion Post 296, a past Jaycee's Rooster, a past member of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.. Ed volunteered many hours as a tax preparer at the Senior Center; served as a volunteer at CGH Medical Center Auxiliary and Health Foundation, and as a volunteer at P.A.D.S.. Ed was a "master" at jigsaw puzzles.
Surviving are his daughters: Karen (Eric) Zigler, Kristine (Thomas) Gallardo and Kim (Clifford) Hansen; his sons: Kraig (Valerie) Schweiss and Karl (Darla) Schweiss; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Connie, and two brothers: Charles and Walter Schweiss.
The Rosary will be recited on Sunday July 30, 2023 at 12:30 PM followed by visitation from 1-3 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, 505 1st Avenue in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday at 10:00 AM in St Mary Catholic Church with the Very Reverend James Keenan officiating. Burial with military honors will conclude at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be given in his name to St. Mary Grade School, St Mary Catholic Church or Newman Central Catholic High School.

Ed was a neat guy. I knew him when I worked at Lawrence Brothers and CGH. Always kind. Always smiling. Rest in peace with Connie. You two were a classy couple. Kim, so sorry for your loss.

I worked with Ed many times in Community Services as well as when caring for Connie. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a dedication to service, and a love for Connie that was ever present and endearing. His love and appreciation for his family was easily seen in his stories. Men like him are rare
