STERLING - Lora Jean Hott, 95, of Sterling, died on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Lora was born February 15, 1929, in Murphysboro, IL, the daughter of Lewis and Dorothy (Doolen) Etherton. She married Phillip Hott on June 10, 1951, in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on May 4, 2005. Lora was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sterling. Her love for teaching led her to Challand Junior High School in Sterling where she taught English and Language Arts for over 20 years. She retired in 1988 with a total of 30 years in the teaching profession. Lora was an avid reader, a true grammar aficionado, a lover of chocolate, and will be fondly remembered as "Lucy" by her family for her sense of humor.
Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Gerall (John Redfield), of Houston, TX, Brenda (Lonny) Reynolds, of Sterling, and Karen Hott, of Chicago; one son, Harry (Pat) Hott, of West Branch, IA; one brother, Lewis (Carolyn) Etherton, of Collinsville, IL; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Lora was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Eugenia Caveglia, and Betty Etherton.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Happy Tails Humane Society of Rock Falls.
