Rogelio Velazquez, 94, formerly of Sterling, died Monday November 25, 2024 at Accolade Healthcare of Savoy. Rogelio was born August 15, 1930 in Lagos De Moreno, Jalisco Mexico, the son of Lenocio and Virginia Velazquez. He married Maria Francisca Zamores 65 years ago on August 26, 1959 in Lagos De Moreno, Jalisco Mexico.
Rogelio worked at North Western Steel & Wire for 32 years. He was a Scale weigher and weighed ladles for the furnaces. He took ESL classes at Sauk Valley Community College, and was a member of the Silver Sneakers at the YMCA. Rogelio was a soft hearted person and enjoyed donating his time at St. Mary's food pantry. Rogelio loved listening to his records, especially Javier Solis at home, in his garage, or working in his yard. He also enjoyed working in his garage with his nephew George Alcantar.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Velazquez of Champaign; two daughters, Laura Castaneda of Urbana and Maria Velazquez of Champaign; one son, Arturo Velazquez of Chicago; one brother, Joe "Pepe" Velazquez of Rock Falls and one grandchild, Evan Castaneda.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Luis Antonio Leoncio & Virginia (Aguila-Rocha) Velazquez Galvan, Carlos Velazquez, Eustolia (Velazquez) Moreno, Maximina (Velazquez) Marquez, Carmela (Velazquez) Galvan, Rodolfo Velazquez, Juan Velazquez and Ana Maria (Velazquez) Lopez.
Visitation will be from 10-11:30 AM Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. Rosary will take place at 11AM and Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 12PM at St Mary Catholic Church, Sterling with Reverend Carlos Monslave, officiating.
A memorial has been established .
