Donald Gardner Obituary

Donald E. Gardner, Ph.D. Fellow ATS Pioneer in Inhalation Toxicology - SAVANNAH - Dr. Donald E. Gardner, 82, was born in 1931 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. On October 3, 2014, he died peacefully at home in Savannah GA after a major illness. On June 2, 1960, he married Elly Peter. Their four children, spouses, and six grandchildren gave them great happiness. They are Stephanie and husband Alexander Dochy and son Nicholas; Susan and husband Samuel Chavez and children Elliot and Devon; Stephen and wife Sabrina and their children Isabella, Peter, and Max; and Stuart. Elly's brother, Kaspar Peter and wife Barbara and son Matthew are extended family. Don enjoyed his career over fifty years in the field of toxicology which he later reflected it was never work. In 2001 he was inducted into the Outstanding Alumni Hall of Fame at Abraham Lincoln High School. He received a B.S. in Biology/Chemistry and an M.S. degree in Medical Microbiology from Creighton University, Omaha, NE where he later received the Outstanding Alumni Merit Award in 1980. In 1971 Don earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Health and Toxicology from the University of Cincinnati. His military career included positions at Fort Detrick, MD and Dugway, UT. He joined the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1964 and served the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati and the Research Triangle Park, NC. He continued to work in research management at Northrop/Mantech until 1994, when he formed a consultancy, Inhalation Toxicology Associates. Don's research generated over 250 scientific publications that greatly expanded the understanding of health risks of air pollutants. In 1988, Don founded the Journal of Inhalation Toxicology where he remained the Editor in Chief for more than 25 years until he retired last month. His stature in the field made the journal a great success and established an international focal point for inhalation toxicology. Don's career achievements have been officially recognized by many scientific bodies including EPA, Academy of Toxicological Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Society of Toxicology, NASA (Outstanding Public Service Award), U.S. Surgeon General's Award, and U. S. Public Health Service. His leadership in many panels of the National Academy of Sciences resulted in his designation as a Lifetime National Associate Member of the National Academy of Sciences. In recognition of his many years of service to Rotary International, Don was named a Paul Harris Fellow. His friendship and mentorship changed the lives of those around him. His family remembers his enjoyment of an occasional cigar on the dock at the lake, listening to live Cuban music, and golf cart rides to the marina. Those of us who knew Don weep at our loss, laugh with our remembrances, and reflect deeply on how much he meant to us. He made the world a healthier and happier place. Memorial contributions are welcome to the Rev. William F. Kelley Endowed Scholarship at Creighton University, Omaha, NE. Memorial service will be held at 1:00 on Tuesday, October 7th at St. Peter's Church on Skidaway Island, GA. Dr. Gardner hired me at the EPA and had a positive influence on me as I began a 38 year long career with the EPA.

I knew Don at St. Peters. He was an amazing man with a mischievous spirit who radiated good humor. He had such a strong personality, that it is hard to believe he is gone. I will miss the twinkle in his eye and the upbeat greeting he gave when he saw you. We were out of town at the time of the funeral. May a peace that is beyond understanding surround you.

Elly, We were out of town and just saw that splendid obituary for Don. We send our heartfelt
symphony in the lost of your husband and an extraordinary man.. man. In the earlier years, whenever we had any contact with Don, he was always so gracious , so understanding. And, of course, his contributions to his profession were simply outstanding. We have appreciated your keeping us in touch, even though we have't always been so responsive. Our best to you and know you will take peace as you remember his life, his contributions, and his love. Sincerely, Bruce Baker (and Karen also even if he hadn't had the pleasure of knowing him)

I offer my condolences to the Gardner family. I worked with Don at Northrop/ManTech for a number of years. As Edith Bunker would sing "those were the days". I pray for peace and comfort to all of you during this time.

Stephanie, Susan and family,
Don was a mentor and advisor for me. I got to know Don on a personal level through Susan while she got her Masters in Toxicology at NCSU and I was working on my PhD. I was privileged to work with him from time to time, and have gone to him over the years for professional guidance and frank advice. Don was always personable and supportive. He would not hesitate to let you know what he really thought – usually with good humor. He will be missed.

Mrs. Gardner. I am sorry to hear of Don's passing and extend my condolences. I worked as the coordinator for the Acute Exposure Guideline Levels Program (AEGL) at EPA. I was privileged to work with Don as the Chairman of the NAS Committee to review and publish these guidelines. It is due to his leadership and responsiveness to our program needs that the program has been so productive. The NAS has published Final AEGL values for 168 chemicals. A remarkable achievement that is largely due to Don's guidance of the NAS committee. I stand in awe of Don's ability to gain consensus from a diverse and sometimes fractious group of discipline expert scientists. I enjoyed working with Don on a personal level. He was someone who could focus on our program needs and the requirements of the NAS as well as accommodate the concerns of the NAS review committee and come to an acceptable accommodation of all parties. His passing is a loss to all of us.

May the sorrow you feel in your heart lighten by the love that surrounds you.
If my hug was strong enough to take away your pain, I would start now and never stop.

What a lovely man, generous with his mind, free with his wit, caring with his heart.
We all will miss him, especially those of us neighbors who know he went to soon.
