Edward Sieg Obituary

Edward Chan Sieg - Savannah - Edward Chan Sieg was born on November 8, 1928, in Savannah, Georgia. The third generation native Savannahian was the son of the late Gerald Chan Sieg and Edward A. Sieg. Chan died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday morning, March 7, 2007. Edward Chan Sieg graduated with honors from Savannah High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees from Armstrong College and earned a Master of Fine Arts and a doctoral degree in educational media at the University of Georgia. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a prolific director, writer, poet, and photographer. At age 12, he published his first work, a magazine article on Mozart's "Requiem" in the Etude Magazine. In listing his own expertise, Sieg cited general, educational and psychological communications, media and educational materials; motion picture and television production; theatre; and general photography and its applications. In the 1950's in Hollywood, CA,he played in the Goldwyn movie, "The Ring." He wrote two TV scripts "Sound of Snow" and "The Return of Rain." In the 1960's, Chan returned to Athens, GA where he pursued his passion which was the theatre. He was appointed as the Resident Director of the Town and Gown Theatre. The drama group produced many well-known Broadway plays. In addition, he was a member of a musical band, playing the drums and piano. He was also an award winning photographer. He was a photographer of stunning creativity. His photograph of Olympic Swimming Gold Medal Champion Mark Spitz won a gold medal in an International Photographic Competition. In the 1970's, Chan worked at the Oatland Island Educational Center as a Savannah film maker. Chan filmed the educational movie about the possibilities of the site. He said, "A lot of films have been made in Georgia, I want to see them made by Georgians." In his later years, he was a historian and author of two books on Savannah, The Squares, An Introduction to Savannah, and Eden on the Marsh, An Illustrated History of Savannah. The proceeds from The Squares, An Introduction to Savannah continue to benefit Chatham Academy, a school for children with learning disabilities. Chan is survived by his wife, Elizabeth H. Sieg; a son, Edward Phillips and daughter-in-law, Dianne Phillips (Birmingham, AL); a daughter, Andra DeVincenzo, and son-in-law, Dr. John P. DeVincenzo (Proctor, AR). Chan's three grandchildren are J.P. DeVincenzo, Julia DeVincenzo, and Michael Phillips. Chan is survived by his sister, Jerry Dillon; his nephew, Larry Dillon and wife, Jan, and their children, Chan and Christian and their grandson, Erin; his niece, Daphne Murphy and her husband, Dr. Mark E. Murphy, and their children, Christopher and Joshua. Also surviving are an uncle, Robert Earl Chan and his family of NY, an aunt , Elva Sieg and her family of Miami, FL; and numerous cousins, including Nannelle Chan, Tai Chan, Archie Chan, Stephanie Stewart, Sandra Chan, Deborah Bowen,Nancy Brown and their extended families. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with Rev. Ron Parrish officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the chapel. The family suggests that remembrances be made to Independent Presbyterian Church, 207 Bull St., Savannah, GA 31401.
