Louis Harkins Obituary

Louis Baker Harkins, Sr. - SAVANNAH - Louis Baker Harkins, Sr., died peacefully on Thursday, August 23, 2007 under the care of Hospice at Azalealand Nursing Home. Mr. Harkins was born September 15, 1912 in Vidalia, Georgia. He is predeceased by his parents, Louis Baker and Henrietta Harkins and his siblings, Betty Montooth and Bill Stevens. Mr. Harkins married the love of his life Frances Elizabeth Harvey on July 5, 1936. Though not an officer in the military, Mr. Harkins was commissioned by the Army Air Force to train foreign military pilots in Orangeburg, South Carolina during World War II. Mr. Harkins was employed by Stevens Shipping Company and Savannah Air Service. He was an FAA flight instructor for over 20 years and taught local pilots the love of flying, including his daughter, Susan. Upon retirement, he obtained his real estate license and worked for several years in that capacity. Mr. Harkins was a staunch Christian and a Deacon Emeritus of Ardsley Park Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School for all age levels for many years and was very involved in evangelism. He spoke often of his joy in winning a soul to Christ. He will be remembered as a man who loved the Lord, his family, his country, his fellow man and the great outdoors, as evidenced by his love of flying, hunting and fishing. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 71 years, Frances; his children, Louis Baker Harkins, Jr., and his wife Madelaine; Frank Harkins; and Susan Brooks Howell and her husband Finn; grandchildren, Celeste Barton and husband Jeff; Louis Harkins, III; Douglas Harkins; James Finn Howell, Jr.; Jessica Brooks Howell; great-grandchild, Cameron Arthur Barton; sister Emma Guyn and half-brothers, Harry Stevens and James Stevens. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday August 26, 2007 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 27, 2007 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with Dr. Calvin Webb officiating. Remembrances may be made to Ardsley Park Baptist Church building fund, 1 East 55th St , Savannah, GA 31405. Dear Frances & family, I am so very sorry for your loss and my heartfelt sympathy is extended to
all of you. Don't know if you remember me, but we worked on switchboard together at St Joseph.
It's been a long time. I know that your heart is heavy with pain but just realize how blessed all of you are to have had Mr Harkins for

Dear Susan and Family,Iknow you will miss your dad very much.I have many memories of your family.I remember a helicpoter landing in your back yard,before the trees were there.I remember tomotoes in buckets,growing on the clothes line.He would come out every day and check out the neighborhood.You all have been blessed to be a part of his family.We are all blessed by knowing him.I pray that you all have peace that passes undertanding.I am keeping ya'll in my prayers.love,in Christ,april
