Michael Joseph Egan - SAVANNAH - Michael Joseph Egan, a Savannah native who became Associate Attorney General of the United States and Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, passed away peacefully January 7, 2016 at his home in Atlanta. Born in Savannah on August 8, 1926, Mike was the son of Dr. Michael J. Egan and Elise Robider Egan, both natives of Savannah. He grew up on Maupas Avenue and attended elementary school taught by the Marist Brothers. Although he never lived in Savannah after the age of 18, he loved the city and always considered it home. He was a member of the Hibernian Society and often returned for St Patrick's Day parades and vacations at Tybee Island. Mike was a graduate of Portsmouth Priory Prep School, Yale University, and Harvard Law School. He served in the US Army in both WWII and Korea. After Law school he moved to Atlanta, where he was a partner in the firm of Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan until he retired in 2000. In 1965 Mike won election to the Georgia General Assembly. As House Minority Leader, he led a moderate Republican caucus that worked closely with Governor Jimmy Carter. After Carter was elected President, he named Mike Associate Attorney General, a position he held for three years. After returning to Atlanta, Mike was elected to the Georgia State Senate, from which he retired in 2000. Mike is survived by his beloved wife Donna, six children and sixteen grandchildren, his sister- in-law Sharon Brown Egan, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by his sister and brother- in-law Joan and James Houlihan, their daughter Joan Houlihan Shotts, and his brother William Robider Egan. A funeral Mass was held for Mike on January 14 at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. We met Mike in his retirement years while attending a birhday party of a mutual friend. He was delighted to know that we knew about Portsmouth Priory now known as the Priory School he attended travelling with a few other boys by train from Atlanta to Rhode Island.
