Rachel Singleton Obituary

Rachel Mae Singleton - HARDEEVILLE, SC - Rachel Mae Singleton, 62, of Hardeeville, made her transition at 11:30 AM, Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC. She was born September 28, 1951 in Ridgeland, SC to Marion and Ruth Ann Middleton Singleton, the youngest daughter of five children. Her brothers Marion Singleton, Robert Singleton and Willie Singleton preceded her in death. A career educator Rachel retired from Savannah High School in 2011 as a science teacher. During her career, she taught in the Chatham County School District, Savannah, Ga and the Jasper County School District Ridgeland, SC as a Life Science and Earth Science instructor. At the collegiate level, she was an instructor of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology at Benedict College, Columbia, SC, (19831-1988), mathematics at Midland Technical College, Columbia, SC (1984), science teacher at Clemson University Extension Vision for Yquth Program, (1992-1993). She completed summer internships in the laboratories of the University of Michigan, South Carolina State College and worked as a medical technologist at Hilton Head Hospital, Jasper County General Hospital, Lexington County Hospital, and R ichland Memorial Hospital. Rachel graduated from Matthew E. West High School, Hardeeville, SC in 1970. She went on to earn a B.S. it Biology from Voorhees College in 1974, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and graduated Cum Laude, and a M.Ed. in Biology from South Carolina State College in 1982. Her lifelong learning pursuits included coursework at the University of South Carolina, Midlands Technical College, and Fisk University. Rachel was an extremely kind and accomplished woman. She will be remembered as a teacher who went out of her way to help her students gain entrance to college and pursue careers in science. She took pride in the accomplishments of her students and at times felt frustration if they did not perform to the best of their abilities. So she pushed and pushed her students to work hard. This extends outside of th e classroom and to her family and community at large. She was a great friend and supporter to many, easy to talk to and laugh with. She was dedicated, funny, creative, and most of all loved. In addition to inspiring young scientific minds, she loved sewing, macrame', ceramics, furniture refinishing, beagles, and baking pecan pies. Surviving are two sons Marion Shon Singleton (Kelly) of Columbia, SC, and Michael Singleton of Hardeeville, SC; one daughter Karen Griffin (Tim) of Columbia, SC; one sister Jannie Baker of Hardeeville, SC; one aunt Retha Mitchell of Philadelphia, PA; five nephews Byron Singleton, Joseph Singleton, Christopher Singleton, Issac Singleton all of Hardeeville, SC and Charles Baker of Gonzales, La; one niece Tia Williams (Glen), Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson Timothy Griffin; two granddaughters Karena Griffin and Brittney Singleton; a host of grand nieces and nephews, and other family members and friends. Visitation will be held at Fisher Chapel Methodist Church in Hardeeville on November 8 at 7 - 8 PM. FLneral services will be held at St. Stephens AME Church in Hardeeville on November 9 at 11:00 am presided by Reverend Spencer. Burial will follow at Purrysburg Memorial Cemetery, Hardeeville. The family wished to extend thier gratitude to the staff of Coastal Carolina Hopsital for their suport in her final days.
