Richard Tuttle Obituary

Richard S. Tuttle passed away in Savannah on November 4, 2017 after a brief illness. He is survived by his brother Raymond Tuttle of Hilton Head, SC and his son Raymond Tuttle of Fredericksburg, VA. His wife of more than 50 years, Irma Stayer Tuttle, passed away in 2016.Richard was the son of Raymond Tuttle, whose family arrived in New Haven in 1635 on the ship Planter from England. His mother, Hazel Suneson Tuttle, a descendant of Swedish and Cornish miners, was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.Richard was born in Pottsville, PA in 1930 during the Depression. With his father moving wherever he could find engineering work, Richard lived in ten different towns in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York before settling in Shaker Heights, OH for high school. He then attended Syracuse University and the State University of New York, earning a Doctorate in Pharmacology. He also served in the Army during the Korean War.He was employed for three decades by the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory in Utica, NY where he specialized in hypertension research. After their retirement in the 1990s, he and Irma moved to Savannah.

Dick and Irma were avid sailors. They had a sailboat on Lake Ontario and in Savannah, and Dick was Commodore of the Crescent Yacht Club in Chaumont, NY and the Geechee Sailing Club in Savannah. He and Irma also were docents at the Davenport House for several years.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 9, 2017 at John Wesley Villas. Burial will be private.
