Samuel Jospin Obituary

Samuel Harvey Jospin - SAVANNAH - Samuel Harvey Jospin died on May 13, 2015. Sam was born in 1922, in Bessemer, Alabama, the son of Rachel and David Jospin. He attended Bessemer High School where he was a star right tackle on the football team. After high school, he attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. He spent his college summers working in the U.S. Steel iron ore mines to help pay for his education. During college, he participated in Officers Candidate School, and upon early graduation in 1943, he joined the US Army, serving in England and the Philippines and rising to the rank of Captain. He met his wife and best friend of 65 years, Sara Ehrenreich Jospin, in Miami Beach, FL, in 1949. They were engaged soon after they met, and married later that year. They have two children, Walter Jospin (Wendy Shoob) and Deborah Jospin (Chris Gallagher), and four grandchildren (Alexandra and Scott Jospin, and Jonathan and Matthew Dutko). Sam is also survived by his sister, Charlotte Cohn of Gadsden, Alabama. Sam was a long-time stockbroker, starting his career at Varnedoe, Chisholm and Skinner, which was later acquired by the Robinson Humphrey Company. Sam spent many happy years as a wealth manager and retired in 2005, as a Senior Vice President of what by then had become Smith Barney. He was an active member of the Jewish Educational Alliance, the Agudath Achim Synagogue, the B'nai B'rith Jacob Synagogue, and the Savannah Golf Club. He served on the boards of the Savannah Public Library and various other local nonprofit organizations. Sam loved his family, his friends, his adopted hometown of Savannah, Tybee Island, The Robinson Humphrey Company, and the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide Football Team. The graveside funeral service will be Friday, May 15, 2015, at 1:00pm at Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Ruven B. Barkan. Remembrances: Hospice Savannah, the Jewish Educational Alliance, or the charity of your choice. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Joseph DeHaven, Dr. William Wallace, their staffs, and all of his caregivers for the wonderful care given to Sam.
