Sandra Elaine "Sandy" Keller
Wilmington Island
Sandra Elaine "Sandy" Keller, 78, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with cancer and other illnesses.
Sandy was born in Spartanburg, SC on January 28, 1943 to parents, John and Florence Roberts. Her father was a career Army officer, so Sandy travelled extensively in her youth, living in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Austria, Japan, and Alaska prior to graduating from Cathedral Latin Catholic High School in Raleigh, NC in June 1960. She worked as a secretary prior to marrying her high school sweetheart Jim Keller in 1962. They met on the beach in Somers Point, NJ in 1957, and dated for 5 five years before getting married at the Cathedral in Raleigh, during Jim's sophomore year at NC State University. Upon graduation in 1964, Jim was commissioned in the U.S. Army. He and Sandy spent 25 years of service in the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard, so she again travelled and lived all over the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska. Everywhere Sandy lived she was involved in their children's school as a substitute teacher, counsellor or volunteer. She loved working with children especially when it involved her own three, or any of her grandchildren. Sandy loved children so much, she would stop to talk to small kids on the street or in stores. She volunteered to read at all of the schools her children attended.
Sandy was an avid reader. She especially liked mysteries and action novels. She read and gave away hundreds of books. Sandy enjoyed swimming and boating, and seeing any of her kids and grand kids' activities.
Sandy and Jim came to Savannah in 1986, after his retirement from the Coast Guard, and employment at Gulfstream. She did volunteer work at St. Andrews and St. Peter the Apostle School. The children referred to her as "Miss Sandy". She loved reading to the lower grade children.
Sandy was a communicant at St. Peter the Apostle Church from the time the parish was established. She loved living on Wilmington Island.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Jim; children, Beth Ganley, Michelle Keller and Jimmy (Julie) Keller all of Savannah; seven grandchildren, Alec, Aidan, Christine, Nick, Grace, Delia, and Matthew; three great grandchildren, Madison, Morgan and Skylar; sisters, Kathy Moncrief of Seattle, WA; Karyn Roberts of Casselberry, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid-19 recommendations and risks, the family will have a private Mass of Christian Burial with interment at Catholic Cemetery. A memorial celebration of life is planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Sandy to St. Peter the Apostle School, Hospice Savannah, Inc., or the
American Cancer Society.
