Thomas Davis Obituary

Thomas Andrew Davis
Savannah, GA
Thomas Andrew Davis passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021.
Born on July 21, 1935 in Macon, GA, Tom was one of two children born to the late Wallace McCroan Davis, Sr., and Thelma Helwagen Davis. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1953 before attending the Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1957. On August 10, 1957, Tom married Dorothy "Dotty" Carolyn Baxley who remained the love of his life for more than 64 years. In 1958, Tom attended the Infantry Officer's Basic Training School at Fort Benning where he would graduate ranked fourth in his class of 179 officers; this ranking earned him the designation of "Distinguished Military Graduate". Tom then attended the Parachutist Jump School at Fort Benning where he earned the Parachutist Badge. Tom spent the following eight years in the United States Army Infantry Reserve.
In 1958, he went to work with his father who had started a wholesale plumbing and industrial supply business named Davis Supply Company. In 1955, Tom purchased Davis Supply Company from his father, and subsequently opened branches in Beaufort, SC, Hilton Head, SC, Vidalia, and Brunswick.
Tom was approached by Apex Supply Company of Atlanta to sell Davis Supply Company, at that time Apex Supply was in the process of negotiating the sale of Apex Supply to Home Depot.
Davis Supply Company ended up as a part of Home Depot where Tom spent five years in a consulting capacity.
Tom had great pride in having been a charter member of the German Heritage Society as well as President of that Society from 2008 to 2010. Tom was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Savannah for over 50 years.
Tom was a devoted gardener; over many years he volunteered his time and money to the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens where he and his wife Dotty donated the Formal Garden as well as the White Garden. Tom and Dotty had the garden of their home at The Landings on tour on three different occasions. Tom was very proud of his Horticulture skills. He also was a proud supporter of the Georgia Historical Society, the United Way, and the Telfair Museum.
Tom is survived by his wife, Dorothy Baxley Davis, daughter, Carol (Mike) Warren of Atlanta, GA, son, Tommy (Kristina) Davis of Savannah, five grandchildren, Baxley (Phil) Costabile, Jimmy (Kathryn) Warren, Hanna Davis, Amanda Stephens, and Christopher Stephens.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 3021 at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.

Tommy Davis was one of the nicest and most gentlemanly people I have known. As a new member of the German Heritage Society, he (along with others) made sure I felt "welcomed". He was indeed a superb friend. Bill
