Jerome "Jerry" Berard, age 87, passed away peacefully Monday, January 27th, 2025 in his home surrounded by his family in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Born on August 21, 1937, in the charming town of Hayward, WI to Anthony and Vivian (Vallem) Berard, Jerry was known for his infectious laughter, boundless energy, and the world's warmest smile.

Jerry met the love of his life, Joan, during their junior year of high school when he made quite the impression by picking her up from her job at the family grocery store. Their shared smiles turned into a love story that lasted a dazzling 70 1/2 years. Jerry was a loving husband, a proud father of one son and two daughters, and a friend to many. He brought people together, not just with his accomplishments, but with his witty stories and playful spirit.

MAJ General Berard was in the Wisconsin National Guard for over 42 years, 26 of those years were in Command time and 15 were full time active.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, three awards of the Meritorious Medal, the distinguished award from the State of Wisconsin and the National Guard Association of the United States and the Silver de Fleury medal from the Army Core of Engineers, among numerous other medals.

He was a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College and attended the Naval Post Graduate school.

Major General Berard was employed at Telemark and Historyland for 26 years. Most of those years as Manager and General Manager. He managed the Lumberjack World Championships for 20 years. At Telemark he was Chief of race for many American Birkebeiners, World Loppet race and Olympic cross-country tryouts.

In 1978 he was awarded the Paul Bacon Award for the most outstanding contribution to organized ski racing for that year.

His highest civilian education is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management.

Jerry is predeceased by his parents, as well as his two brothers, Curt and Wayne. He leaves behind his beloved wife Joan, hisdevoted children, Deb (Bert) Freeman, Mike and Diane (Jean Marie) Maubet, 4 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildrenand friends who remember him for his adventurous spirit and big heart.

In his honor, a memorial service will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 10680 Main St. Hayward WI on June 13, 2025 at 11 AM with a visitation taking place at 10 AM where all who loved him are invited to share a smile and a story. A Military ceremony will be held at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery N4063 Veterans Way, Spooner WI 54801 at 3:00 P.M. where Jerry will rest peacefully.
