Moira Vander Woude Obituary

Moira G. Vander Woude (Moya Lani) September 1932 - May 20, 2021 Of Redlands, CA, passed away peacefully on May 20 surrounded by family. Moira was a gifted Tahitian dancer and instructor, and owned and operated Moya Lani Polynesian Dance Studio in San Bernardino and Redlands for over 30 years. She was warmly and lovingly adored by her close-knit family and friends as well as her students, along with the internationally renowned performers who appeared with her for years in California, and in Papeete, Tahiti, and Huahine, Tahiti. She was honored for her never-ending support for the people of Polynesia and their ancient culture, by being awarded by native islanders the title of "Honorary Queen of Huahine." Moya was born in England and spent the first 20 years of her life in South America, first in Salinas, Ecuador, and later in Lima, Peru, where she met and married her husband of 69 years - an American named Jack. Shortly thereafter they moved to Boston, MA, and then on to Southern California, where they raised their family. Above all else, Moira adored her loving family, including her husband Jack, her four children, David, Bruce, Teresa and Vikki, her seven grandchildren, Reuven Hurwitz, Mark and Alisha Vander Woude, Lauryn and Sarah Lucca, and Ben and Rachel Palajac and her eight great-grandchildren. Moira was a deep believer in Jesus Christ and joyfully joined in her passing with her father, mother, sister Sheila, brother Terrence and her friends and Guardian Angels who passed before her.

I was so sad to hear this news. Moya might have been tiny, but she was very much a force of nature.

I treasure the years I was a student at her studio, learning Polynesian dancing. She made sure we practiced the traditional island styles plus some added moves of her own. We had so much fun performing at various shows, fairs and luaus. I still have some of the costumes we wore, some that she taught how to make.

My heart goes out to her family. They should know how much Moya touched all of us with her friendship and spirit.

I am saddened to learn of Moya Lani’s passing.

My sister Marie Kukula Tyner and I were among Moya Lani’s early dance students, some 45+ years ago. What fun we had, learning to dance with her. We performed at convalescent homes and once at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino. Our families were also friends and I recall babysitting with Teresa and Vikki a few times.

Sending heartfelt condolences and love to Jack and all of the VanderWoude’s, at this sad time. We will always remember her as young and beautiful.

I am heart broken to hear this news but ever so happy she is with our Lord now. I have such amazing memories learning Tahitian dance from her. Performing and many many places. She made us feel so special and was always patient with us when we were having difficulty learning a move or a new dance. Not only in dance class did she create memories but as friends also. Sleepovers and get togethers. I have always thought of her and when we went to Hawaii they were surprise I knew how to do the Poi balls and moves. I have been teaching my grand daughter the Poi balls and she has so much fun doing it. Thank you Moya for passing on your knowledge, love and friendship. I love you all and the memories!

Rest in peace Moya. I truly enjoyed those years taking my three girls to your tahitian classes and watching them learn to dance. I will always remember you as my children’s beloved, inspiring and invigorating instructor! Condolence to the family!

I had the privilege of dancing with Moira for many years. It was not just dancing she taught, she taught me and other students to be strong and keep moving. Herb helped with the drumming and enjoyed it very much. Moya was extremely smart, talented, and very strong. She could out dance all of us. We will truly miss her.

Moya was a graceful, strong, and amazing person. I had the honor of knowing her in my childhood years as her student. Her kindness was as memorable as her talents as a Polynesian dancer. I will always remember her because of the way she believed in me...in turn, she had me believing in myself. My deepest condolences to her family. Praying for healing during this time of loss.

It was an honor to learn Polynesian dancing under Moya Lani’s guidance for nearly twelve years. I definitely learned strong work ethics and life lessons which shaped me into adulthood all through understanding and respecting the Polynesian culture. I am forever thankful for that. May she Rest In Peace and happiness.

I’m so saddened by reading this. We have such wonderful memories of Aunt Moira and Uncle Jack visiting us in Alabama a long time ago and delighting us all with a Tahitian dance. We were all wowed! I visited them in California once and was treated like royalty with a grand tour of the area. So loving, giving and fun. Sending my sincere condolences to to Uncle Jack and family. I love you! Chip.
