William (Bill) Moore died on December 13, 2012 in Kalispell, Montana due to complications from pneumonia and lupus. He was eighty years of age.
Bill Moore was born in Siloam Springs, Arkansas to Robert A. and Nelle Donly Moore. The family moved to Redlands ten years later. He attended Redlands High School, and graduated from University of Redlands (cum laude in History) in 1954. At the U of R, Bill ran track and was a DJ at KITO where he met Peggy J. Perkins, of San Bernardino. Bill and Peg married in 1952. They lived in Hong Kong 1955-­?56 while Bill did his doctoral research in Asian Studies, supported by a Rotary Foundation Fellowship. He earned his PhD from Claremont Graduate School in 1962. During his distinguished career in higher education, Moore taught and was an administrator at San Bernardino Valley College (1954-74), moved to the University of Redlands (Vice President and Provost, 1985-76), Crafton Hills College (President, 1976-81), Chabot College (President, 1981­85), and became President of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities from 1986 until his retirement in 1991. He served on the U of R Board of Trustees from 1976-96 as well as on several other governing boards in higher education.
Bill and Peg moved from Redlands to the Bay Area in 1981, in part to be near their three children. They divided their time between Napa and West Yellowstone, Montana. Bill was an avid dry fly fisherman, inspired by the rivers of Montana. In his later years he became increasingly interested in woodcarving and the mysteries of the universe, reading widely in astrophysics.
Bill Moore is survived by his wife Peggy, their three children, Christopher, Kevin, and Lisa, five grandchildren, and his brother, Robert.
