Albert Sands Obituary

Albert M. Sands Jr., 79 of Hollow Road, Catawissa, was surrounded by his family this past weekend and went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday at home. He had been in failing health for the past several months.

Born in Shenandoah, May 22, 1927, he was a son of the late Albert M. Sr. and Anna Yurgal Sands.

He served in the Marine Corps as a staff sargeant during World War II and Korean War.

Albert owned and operated Sands Restaurant in Shenandoah for 57 years, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Slabtown, American Legion and American VFW, both in Shenandoah and Catawissa, Danville Elks, Polish American Fire Company, Shenandoah, and Frosty Valley Country Club.

Albert enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes McDonald, in 2006.

Surviving are his wife the former Florence "Flo" Wiekrykas, with whom he would have observed their 57th wedding anniversary in July; two sons, Roy J. Sands and his wife, Chris, Chicago, and Albert M. Sands, at home; two daughters, Mary T. Chatkiewicz and her husband, Tony, rural Catawissa, Ann M. Starr, and her husband, Peter, Boyertown: nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, William Sands, Barnesville, Charles Sands, Levittown, Kenneth Sands and his wife Gloria, Shenandoah; three sisters Dolores Kriscik, Tina Skaudin, and Shirley Matalavagh, all of Shenandoah.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, 304 Slabtown Road, Slabtown, with the Rev. Thomas I. Mannion, his pastor as the celebrant. Friends will be received Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions in his memory may be made to Columbia Montour Home Hospice, 410 Glen Ave., Bloomsburg, PA 17817. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen R. Horne Funeral Home 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa.
