Born in Maizeville, where he was a longtime resident, he was a son of the late Joseph and Anna Cominsky Pautienus.

He was the former caretaker of St. Louis Cemetery and several other Frackville cemeteries for many years.

He was a member and volunteer of the former Our Lady of Siluva Catholic Church, Maizeville, maintaining the church and its properties until it closed. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Girardville.

Ed was a 1955 graduate of Gilberton High School and a 1960 graduate of Penn State with degrees in biology and secondary education. He did postgraduate work at UCLA before becoming the first Pennsylvania resident to join the Peace Corps, serving in Nigeria, West Africa, from 1961 to 1964. A former mayor of Gilberton, he was always an advocate for people in need and a caretaker for his family and friends. He was an avid Eagles fan and as a younger man enjoyed skiing, hunting and trips to various casinos and was a life member of the Continental Hose Company No. 3, Gilberton.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Robert and Joseph Pautienus.

Ed is survived by his two sisters, Bernice Schucker, New Cumberland, and Joan Carl, Tower City, also by sisters-in-law, Anna Marie Pautienus, Fayetteville, and Joan Pautienus, Frackville; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Girardville, with the Rev. Paul Rothermel, pastor, as the celebrant.
