Danielle KENDALL Obituary

Kendall - Danielle Jessica
October 24, 1990 - June 2, 2013
Taken from us far too soon, Danielle our precious beautiful daughter. Devoted and protective sister, cousin, niece, loyal friend, U of C Chancellors Club scholar, Schulich School of Engineering Prestige Scholar, fierce competitor and adventurer.
Danielle was tragically taken from us at 5400 meters while climbing the glacier portion of Cotopaxi Volcano in Ecuador. She was on the trip of a lifetime that she had carefully planned and prepared for these past 2 years.
Danielle was born in Calgary at the Rockyview Hospital and raised in Springbank. She attended Springbank Co-operative Playschool, Ecole Elbow Valley Elementary School and Springbank Middle School. Her determination to complete High School with a French immersion diploma meant long bus rides to Cochrane High School where she graduated Honors with Distinction from the French Immersion Program.
"Dee Dee" as she was affectionately called by her younger siblings Allison and Graeme; "Pumpkin" by her mom and dad. She began her career in sports and athletics at an early age. We recall with fondness many road trips to the SE Soccer Center for practices, matches and tournaments; trips across Alberta and Saskatchewan for out of town tournaments. Their team certainly didn't win every game but an in depth post game analysis of every play was certain to occur between Danielle and her Dad, Gord. Her goal was to always improve. She learned to figure skate in Springbank and took up dance lessons, which she later said "not my favorite, thanks, I'd rather be running". Throughout her high school years she was a member of the Calgary Spartan's Track & Field Club. As a result of her dedication to training she became a top ranked Canadian runner in the women's 400m. She was a member of numerous Team Alberta Track & Field Teams which cumulated with a silver medal at 2009 Canada Summer Games in the women's 4 X 400meter relay team. She continued her track and field career with the University of Calgary Dinos Track and Field Team. Danielle was an integral part of the Dino team. She was part of two relay teams which she helped her team sprint to top three finishes at Nationals. The cumulative effort of the team resulted in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) Women's National Team title in March 2013. Danielle felt great pride in the team's victory. Danielle aspired to be her best every day. She set high expectations for her teammates and friends. Danielle had a voracious appetite for reading and good food. She leaves us with her bucket list of books.
Danielle was also an avid volunteer. In 2006 she volunteered through her High School with Habitat for Humanity, here in Calgary. She was a member of the Student Council with the Cochrane High School and in 2009 volunteered in her first year with the Schulich School of Engineering with Homes for Hope in Tijuana, Mexico.
Danielle was an accomplished pianist and later played trumpet through middle school and high school concert & jazz bands. She was a member of Sparks, Brownies and later Girl Guides. These activities instilled a love of camping, adventure and the outdoors. Our family participated in many "epic outdoor pursuits", favorite trips including the circumnavigation of Clear Lake, Manitoba, Maui Haleakala Crater hike and numerous hikes of Mount Yamnuska and Temple Mountain. Danielle's love of the mountains was evident as she collected a small rock memento from every mountain she summited. Her current collection includes 25 and one last climb, Ruminahui, Ecuador May 31, 2013.
She earned her Degree at the University of Calgary, Schulich School of Engineering,
Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with Distinction June, 2013 which was awarded Posthumously to her mother Noreen on Monday, June 10 , 2013. She recently received her membership letter from APEGA. She was to begin working full time as an Oil and Gas SAGD field engineer in Mid-August.

At the time of her passing Danielle was on the trip of a lifetime to South America.
Traveling and "living the life" exploring Colombia before venturing to Ecuador.
We will forever miss you at speed Rummoli and your travel friends are saddened that you are not here to "own" the game of Hearts. Forever in our Hearts.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Michael Catholic Community (800-85 Street SW, Calgary) on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. If so desired, donations to the Danielle Kendall Memorial Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated (www.netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/daniellekendall www.netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/daniellekendall> ).

Dear Noreen, Gord, Allison and Graeme
We have felt shock and sadness from the first moment we heard Danielle's name on the CBC News. Although it has been many years since we have lived in Springbank, I always have remembered what a great friend you were, Noreen and your fantastic kids. They were so young then, but clearly have grown up into outstanding individuals. Words can not express how incredibly sad we are today. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you each and every day. Danielle will be remembered by her outstanding accomplishments for a woman of her age. I hope to find your current address and be in contact over the next bit. Julie, Paul, Sarah and Adam Cheeseman (Meaford, Ontario)

I had the pleasure of teaching Danielle in her first year of school - kindergarten. She was a lovely girl with an incredibly conscientious attitude. I am so proud to learn of her many successes and accomplishments. What an amazing woman she was.
Her family is equally incredible. I remember how loving and supportive parents you were to Danielle. Although her life was cruelly short, she was blessed with so much.
Sincerely,
Barb Gerst

I had the pleasure of working with Danielle for three summers at Connacher where she demonstrated a strong work ethic and the intellectual ability to learn our heavy oil business. She was very interested in the lives and travel adventures of others and was already planning her future adventures. Truly a person worth having known and to be remembered.

My heart has been aching for you ever since the first newscast and every day since I hoped it was not your Danielle.
If there is any way you can take comfort from knowing how many people are sharing your devastation, maybe the burden of sorrow will be eased a little. You have so much to be proud of and, though I did not know Danielle, just by knowing you, Gord & Noreen, I know she wouldn't want you to weep for how she died but rejoice for how she lived. Just like you two always did and will again.

Take care of one another, your friend Loretta
