Shiloh Pepin Obituary

KENNEBUNKPORT — Shiloh Jade Pepin, daughter of Leslie and Elmer Pepin, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

She was born Aug. 4, 1999. Shiloh was born with sirenomelia, and in her 10 short years she endured two kidney transplants.

In 2005, she was chosen to be the Children's Miracle Network Champion for Maine. Although Shiloh's rare condition was considered an insurmountable disability, she never saw it that way. Shiloh lived life to the fullest, tackling every challenge with characteristic courage, humor and a positive outlook. She loved arts and crafts, swimming, butterflies and spending time with her family. Although her physical appearance was the first thing that caught everyone's eye, Shiloh's personality left the truly lasting impression.

Visiting hours were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. A funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Saint David's Church in Kennebunk, followed by an interment ceremony at Pine Grove Cemetery in West Kennebunk. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to www.shilohpepin.com to help support the Shiloh Foundation for accessible playground equipment. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel. I had seen the documentary on little Shiloh years ago. Time passes so quickly. I didn't realize she died in 2009. I saw that her mother Leslie passed away as well. If any one is still reading this page, I pray her father Elmer Pepin (a very talented artist) and the rest of Shiloh's and Leslie's family are happy and well. I re-watched the documentary about Shiloh, and she truly was an extraordinary little girl! Vivid and lively and funny. Her brief time on Earth was a blessing. All the best to her family and friends.

Leslie and Elmer
I am so sorry! I just heard on Nov. 21, about Shiloh's passing and I have not stop dropping tears since. From the first time I saw your daughter on TLC, I just fell in love with her. You two were very lucky to have her and she was lucky to have you two for parents. Great Job. She was perfect! We all know people who have walked the earth 8 times longer than her and they were never, ever noticed. But your daughter was blessed with such an amazing personality that no two legs would ever give her.

Dear Leslie and Elmer,
I've been hesitant to send a message because no amount of words will fully convey my thoughts. I have so many feelings to share, but most of all I want you to know that I truly believe that Shiloh will be forever remembered in our family (and no doubt by many other families) as our children's most valuable teacher.
It is obvious that Shiloh left pieces of herself; her wisdom and her beauty all over this world. I will be forever grateful that my children had the opportunity to know Shiloh. Thank you for loving her so, that you were willing to give her a life of opportunity and normalcy. Thank you for sharing your most precious gift with so many. She will be forever in our hearts- as butterflies fly and belly-laughs are remembered.

Dear Elmer & Leslie,

Dear Leslie and Elmer,
I was so saddened to hear of the passing of your precious little daughter, Shiloh. My eight year-old daughter and I have watched the first TLC special many, many times and had anxiously awaited the second special so we could once again "peek" into the life of such a remarkable and inspirational little person. The wisdom of the things that she said, and the optimistic attitued she maintained throughout such challenging circumstances were uplifting and awe-inspiring to both of us.
When my daughter learned of Shiloh's passing, she cried like she had lost a good friend. She had been working on making Shiloh a special card after watching the second TLC special, and was so sad that Shiloh would not get to receive it. She really wished she could have been Shiloh's friend in life.
Little Shiloh was truly a miracle sent down from heaven to bring a message of acceptance, strength and perseverance to the world. Thank you for sharing her with all of us.
God bless you both. I will pray that God brings you comfort in your grief.

October 31, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Elmer & Leslie,

When I turned my computer on last Saturday morning and learned of Shiloh's passing I felt my heart break and the tears started flowing down my cheeks.

I am so glad to have gotten to "know" your special little angel theough the specials on TLC. I watched every time they were on.

She was such an inspiration. Her cheerful outlook on life showed the world life is what you make it and that we should all enjoy every moment we have here on this earth.

I shall remember your beautiful daughter every time I hear a child's laughter or see a butterfly fluttering around in the warm summer air.

Rest in peace sweet Shiloh, we are all better for having had you in this life.

Leslie and Elmer,

I am so honored and priviliged to have cared for Shiloh soon after she was born. I, like many others, had the great pleasure of getting to know a beautiful little girl and the family who adores her. As you know, she was a fighter from the very beginning. In her 10 years, she was able to inspire, motivate, and warm the hearts of all who have come to know her. Shiloh was also able to convey what is most important in life....family. Ohana.

Mommy and daddy rest assured that my Eddie was waiting for your daughter when she flew up to heaven on the wings of angels. It's heartbreaking not to have them here on earth, but always remember the beautiful memories she has blessed us with and that someday you will be together again. Shiloh taught us all how to embrase life's challenges with love and laughter and most importantly she taught us how to live for today. Bless her lil' heart she went out with a bang ;)

Ten years ago God decided to send down to earth one very special angel to teach people life's lessions in love, patience, hope and faith. That angel had the most piercing eyes, a cute button nose and a laugh that made you smile. When she was done teaching God called her back home. Love you Shiloh.

God looked around His garden
and He found an empty place.
And then He looked down
upon the earth,
And saw her tired face.
He put His arms around her,
and lifted her to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
for he always takes the best.
He knew that she was suffering,
He knew she was in pain,
He knew that she would never
get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
and the hills were hard to climb,
So, He closed her weary eyelids,
and whispered "Peace be thine."
It broke your hearts to lose her.
but she didn't go alone,
For part of you went with her,
the day God called her home.

To Shiloh's Mom & Dad...What an adorable little girl you were blessed with. When watching her on tv it was hard to imagine she was just 10 years old. She was wise beyond her years. I enjoyed her on Oprah and followed her story on TLC. The episode where she went away to camp was truly inspirational. I truly believe she is in Heaven now, no longer burdened with pain. I know the days ahead will be difficult for you, but you have something to be proud of. You were both outstanding parents...the love you felt for her was so evident.God bless you both and thank you for sharing Shiloh with all of us.

Leslie and Elmer, her light has not gone out but only been redirected to others that need to hear her message. It is because of the two of YOU (and of course, Dr. Hottie (Hand)) that we ALL know such happiness. She has infected us with her spirit and reminded us of how precious our own lives are. Nothing will take away the hurt, the anger of losing her, the emotional loss and the physical pain you will feel in the coming months/years...but I hope knowing that we appreciate you sharing her with us for 10 beautiful years gives you some comfort. I know when I see a butterfly 30 years from now I will smile...because I met an equally beautiful creature in my lifetime.

Dear Leslie and Elmer,
I live in Illinois, and I first heard of Shiloh on TLC. Your story touched my heart and my two daughters. We cried watching that episode, not because of her condition, but because of how brave she was. How she showed everyone that her condition wasn't something that crippled her, but made her stronger. It made her the most remarkable, beautiful little girl that anyone would have been proud to know and to love. It made you realize not to take things for granted. You had the best opportunity in the world raising her as God gave her to you. I know in the beginning you thought you might have been selfish of keeping her, but I think that she (Shiloh) wouldn't have wanted it any other way. She was a true blessing from above. God knows what we can endure and he had you raise her, and now he will keep her in heaven. I can just see her swimming (without the wet suit), or running and skipping trying to catch the butterflies, and laughing that beautiful laugh that she has. I can still hear it today. She was such a bubbly little girl that wanted to live life's fullest. She will forever touch the heart of America. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. May you find the strength and peace of Gods love and Shiloh's, to carry you through these times. God Bless you.
